Italian 20th Century Painted & Gilt Chest

A unique painted bow-front commode/chest of drawers from the late 18th century in striking finishes and proportions that beg for a prominent spot in the home like a small buffet or console beyond clothing storage. Its red marble top, likely a type of Campan Mélange, shows exciting movement of gray and white veins throughout the red-maroon stone that has been cut and polished to a sloping bullnose edge. Two wide, spacious drawers occupy the deep case that bears the remains of a tonal blue painted scheme which has worn significantly to reveal the blond pine grain underneath. Both drawers open easily by pairs of solid, cast brass drop handles with satisfying heft. The chest is raised on four tapered legs in a slight cabriole scroll, armored at the feet with acanthus applications in gilt bronze. By its lines and engaging features, this period demilune chest of drawers will make for a lovely addition to any room, having been gently cleaned and waxed to maintain the nicely weathered finish and natural character. A substantial French commode from the 19th century wrapped in finely-grained mahogany trimmed with inlaid brass that frames the drawer-fronts and chamfered corners. The original marble slab blends streaks of peach and white throughout the gray stone for exciting movement, patinated with fine scratches and edge chips. A stack of three drawers whose fronts are matched for expansive continuity of the grain are punctuated by ring pull hardware in brass that coordinates with the expertly inlaid strips of metal creating a border, or paneled effect, around them. One (ornate) key is shared between the working locks, and all drawers have been thoroughly cleaned inside & out to glide easily. Veneer on the side panels displays a lightly rippled effect but remains intact and stable for continued use. Finished with a French paste wax to maintain the gorgeous color and patina, this handsome storage piece is ready for its next home. Two spacious drawers occupy the deep case that is entirely washed in a soft gray typical of the Scandinavian taste for light palettes that aim to brighten rooms in dark winters, warmed by an intentional scraped effect revealing some of the grain underneath. Two bow-front drawers fitted with Louis XVI style hardware retain some of the original paper lining, the areas of loss (to the paper) creating another layer of tactile patina. The chest is raised on four tapered legs.
