Scrolled elements curl outward from the pillars attaching multiple spit hooks to adjust for cooking temperatures. Decorative scrollwork in between the arched legs are reminiscent of fleur-de-lis to underscore the French-made origins of these sculptural fireplace tools. Designed as a complementary pair, each andiron is the mirror image of the other with an offset hind leg (the bracket to elevate the burning logs) supported by a spike. 19th Century Bamboo & Decoupage Fireplace Screen
$1,200.0049.63"H x 31.38"W x 14"D
Dimensions: 49 ⅝” H x 31 ⅜” W x 14” D
A French fireplace screen, made circa 1890 of bamboo, recently updated in England with ebonized (painted) finish and decoupaged horticultural theme of hyacinth, butterflies, and dragonflies. Screens like this were intended to prevent coals, embers and sparks from escaping the fireplace, while keeping clothing, pets and small children out. In warmer months, when the fireplace is not in use, a firescreen will add interest and obscure the empty fireplace from sight. We think this screen could be equally interesting as a clothing valet in the bedroom. Original manufacturing tag from Perret & Vibert of Paris, “House of Bamboo”, affixed to the frame. Dimensions: 30 ¼” H x 34 ½” W x 22” D
A wonderful painted English fireplace screen or guard, made there circa 1890. The design is intended to help keep coals, embers and sparks in the fireplace and clothing, pets and small children out. They are sometimes called nursery guards and allow all to enjoy the warmth of a wood burning fire from a safe distance. In warmer months, when the fireplace is not in use, a firescreen will add interest and obscure the empty fireplace from sight. This fireguard has its original green paint, which has acquired a lovely patination, and a polished nickel band that ornaments the top. English 19th Century Hand-Forged Iron Trivet
$1,100.0015.75"H x 15.38"W x 15.38"D
Dimensions: 15-¾”H x 15-⅝”W x 15-⅜”D
A small but lovely example of the blacksmith’s art. The hand-forged 19th century iron trivet features a flat surface to place hot pots that have come off the open fire or stove after cooking. It has two straight legs in the back and one cabriole leg in the front. Stretchers connect the legs and it forms an open shelf to place another hot pot. This would have been next to the fireplace on the hearth, now it could easily be repurposed as a plant stand or unexpected side table. View the detailed images to see more.
