Pair of French 19th Century Painted Louis XVI-Style Bergères
Dimensions: 36-3/4″H x 25-3/4″W x 25-1/2″D
A pair of painted and upholstered French 19th century Louis XVI-style bergères. The chairs date to the 1870’s, when they would have been carved and painted by hand. The frames still wear their original paint, which has become beautifully worn over the decades, imparting a patina that helps illustrate their age and tell a little bit of their story. Each painted frame has an arched seat-back that is braced by a vertical posterior stretcher, a shapely front-rail and curved side-rails. They are painted a creamy ivory that has aged magnificently and are embellished with classic Louis XVI carved details. The pair are upholstered in a paprika-colored fabric that is affixed to the frame with brass nail heads. The upholstery does show some signs of age.
