Dimensions: 3 ¼” H x 9 ⅝” W x 9 ¾” D
High-relief antique Palissy ware style Portuguese majolica wall plate, circa 1900, very much in the taste of the iconic Caldas da Rainha ceramic tradition where artists created fantastic depictions of marine animals like this one. The plate is occupied by a menacing-looking crab in the center with segmented legs, resting on a sandy ground and joined by a pair of shells below. The plate rim is richly colored in a murky palette of green and blue with frothy white glazes and textural elements alluding to seaweed. Strung with wire on the back, this work of ceramic art can be mounted to the wall or displayed on a table. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition.

The broad leaves and crosshatched borders of the plates will coordinate beautifully with other cabbageware and lettuce leaf ceramics from the period. The translucent emerald green glaze, typical of majolica, is in good antique condition still vibrant with slight crazing that verifies the age and authenticity. Sold as a set of four. Dimensions: 1 ¼” H x 10 ⅝” W x 10 ⅝” D
A fantastic and extensive set of Portuguese-made green cabbageware plates in three sizes for casual meals or cultivated dinner parties. The smallest plate size is ideal for bread or dessert, they feature pronounced ribs like a realistic leaf of cabbage or lettuce, appearing more vintage in age without the signature of a foundry apart from the numbers “2621” stamped in the base. One of the small plates exhibits a repaired break across the middle, see the image gallery for more information. The remaining salad and dinner plates do bear the stamp of the iconic foundry Bordallo Pinheiro and are more recent in age, exhibiting the symmetrical vein design that radiates across the plate. The plates have a comfortable heft to them and pleasing, scalloped shape. Sold as a complete set of 46 pieces. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos.
