A set of four, circa 1890 English Windsor chairs. Made from oak with shaped oxbow-handrails at the top connecting to shaped splats and thin spindles for a backrest. Two additional spindles in V-formation brace the handrail from the seat. Saddle seats, akin to a “tractor seat” are thoughtfully carved for the comfort of the sitter. The chairs are raised on turned legs with low carvings attached by stretchers. Due to the hand crafted nature of the set, as well as antique condition, variation between each chair may be observed and is to be appreciated. Please view the detailed images. Sold as a set of four.

Swedish 18th Century Painted Three-legged Chair

Swedish, late 18th century painted wood side chair known as a “Blekingestol” on three slender legs to support the round seat all washed in a saturated oxblood red paint. The surprisingly comfortable chair back features both undulating carved splats and turned spindles that support the thick, bowed handrail to cradle the back of the sitter. The seat itself is a thick disc of wood carved to a shallow well in the center, patinated by time and use to reveal the blonde wood underneath. Three slender, turned legs splay outward in perfect balance of proportion (a practical consideration on uneven floors) that keeps the design open and portable. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. Swedish set of four dining/side chairs from circa 1790, in classic Gustavian taste for elegant proportions and timeless details. Their painted frames reveal patinated layers of teal, peacock-blue pigment and weathered gray in a soft matte finish with fine craquelure. This unique coloration adds definition to the chair backs of three columnar splats and a line of three rondels in the handrail. The chair seats retain their original horsehair filling, wrapped in plain muslin while they await new upholstery. Slender tapered legs braced by H-form stretchers have both order and a sense of lightness to fit anywhere. A delightful Swedish bench from the early 19th century, this petite settee in the classic Gustavian taste for lightness and simplicity features a chalk-white painted frame. The bench seat has been wrapped in new upholstery of plain muslin, sheltered by a pierced seat back accented with stylized carvings to represent iris (the beloved fleur-de-lis of French royalty) framed by Gothic arches. A fantastic pair of vintage Italian “Cesca” style armless chairs in the manner of Marcel Breuer. First presented in 1928, the design has become iconic of Bauhaus minimalism intersecting with a reverence for traditional craftsmanship. The gently curved seats and seat backs are made of tightly woven cane stretched between a frame of complementary beech wood left in its natural blonde tone, cantilevered on tubular chromed steel legs that form a continuous line to achieve an effect that is light in visual weight and mass. Italian Vintage Set of Four Ebonized Upholstered Armchairs

A very unusual set of four dining armchairs from Italy–1980s, the height of Postmodern and Memphis design– with stylistic references that go back to the late 19th century. The influence of Charles Rennie Mackintosh is undeniable as the chairs are stylized, even architectural in their simplification of distinct geometric lines made even more pronounced by the sturdiness of the ebonized frames. At the top of the chairs is a crescent-shaped headrest narrowing to sharp points, rising from the splat of three parallel bars set at a comfortable recline behind the upholstered seats (currently in a sage-green chenille). Vertical legs at the front and sabered legs at the back are sturdy, rising up to half-moon armrests. Dutch Painted Parcel Gilt Settee with New Upholstery

A fantastic Dutch Regency style settee from the 19th century, recently updated with new upholstery to complement the painted frame with sections of parcel gilt trim. Wrapping the tight seat-back and wide bench seat is new upholstery of a soft, chenille texture printed with dense foliate imagery inspired by French Verdure tapestry. The cushions are held in place with brass hardware (knob latches) seen from the outside that lock the panels in place and can be easily removed for servicing or to change the upholstery. The cozy interior is outlined by the painted frame in a shade of green best described as “pistachio” enhanced with sections of parcel gilt. Four tapering legs carved in a faux bamboo silhouette (also ringed in gold) across the front and sabered legs across the back are sturdy on the floor. French 19th Century Massive Directoire Settee

This massive French Directoire 19th century fruitwood bench/settee is upholstered in a regal striped fabric of saffron gold & salmon pink. While the large scale might be generous and awesome, the construction in itself gives it the presence of authority to preside over a room without ostentatious symbols: the straight, rounded handrail is held together with a visible tongue-and-groove joint at the center and three pair of robust legs support the mass of the seat. A firm bench seat appears even wider by the railroaded stripes in vertical orientation across the upholstery, aided by a visual counterpoint that comes from a pair of matching bolster cushions which are finished on the ends in the figures of brass lion heads clutching rings! Swedish 19th Century Biedermeier Chaise

An expressive Biedermeier period chaise lounge–also called a “recamier”–dating to circa 1820 Sweden, in the manner of the famous maker Karl Johan. Resembling a gondola in silhouette, the left-arm rises from the corner to develop into an exaggerated wave with spiral (very much in the French Restauration taste for scrolled arms) before cresting again to make the lower arm on the right side. Maple wood, by its natural luminosity and elusive grain patterns, was an ideal choice in constructing the frame to underscore the sense of movement happening throughout. Currently the upholstery is a medium blue geometric jacquard that is in fair condition. Note there have been a few professional repairs made to stabilize the outer lobes of both arms but overall the frame is heavy and sturdy. Below the diamond-carved panels at the lower corners of the bench, robust turned feet elevate the frame as the final complement to the mastery in carving seen above. Italian, Baroque/Rococo period (18th century) footstool with the most elegant carvings across the apron and cabriole legs. Presently the boxed seat is upholstered in a serene shade of periwinkle velvet–a more recent upgrade–outlined in a slightly contrasting tufted trim of light green. The floral and foliate motifs interspersed along the wood frame have a lyrical quality as they curve along the apron, a siren’s song drawing one down to appreciate the vision of the artisan, and contemplate the luxurious opulence of the period. The painted finish has delightfully patinated to a craquelure texture in earthy hues of sand which in no way diminishes the confident stance of the short, bowed feet. Fabulous pair of late 19th century Swedish Gustavian stools featuring the regal motifs of Louis XVI, toned down by the painted white frames. Firm but comfortable seats are presently upholstered in a gorgeous striped material of alternating gold and ivory bands over a natural filling (probably horse hair). At roughly chair height, these could be placed anywhere in the home for extra seating or footstools. Around the apron of the seat is a line of gilded molding punctuated by gilded rosettes at the corners. Tapering feet carved with a foliate theme on the upper half narrow toward the floor with fluted carvings that have been accented in gilt. A majestic French 19th century Directoire fauteuil armchair in charming patinated finish that reveals at least three layers of different colors painted over the carved wood frame. The most recent color is a pale, buttery cream, blending with a stone gray, and where those have chipped off a pastel turquoise is exposed. Currently the upholstery is a linen or linen-blend hopsack in tan, outlined by a nailhead trim. A seat cushion is removable for easy maintenance which is in worn but good condition to continue using. Small rosettes decorate the arms and junction of the legs which have fine, turned rings to accentuate their svelte profile. It appears a crack on the chair’s right arm was professionally repaired, which is almost imperceptible under the textured paint. Swedish Biedermeier 19th Century Birch Armchairs

A pair of Swedish Biedermeier armchairs from circa 1820 in birch that expresses the most extraordinary patterns (which occur naturally in the wood) but have been revealed by the skilled hand of the artisan. The rather square and restrained profile of the chairs is contrasted by the lyre represented on the splat, which incorporates thin metal rods as the “strings” for the instrument. Seats are currently upholstered in a heavyweight twill material of complementary faded brick tone that is in worn condition but acceptable to continue using. They are a natural seat height for dining, and generous in scale to incorporate as occasional chairs for a living room setting. Wood frames have been gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to maintain the natural luster. A fabulous set of carved oak Biedermeier-style chairs from Sweden, early 19th century, with soft cut-velvet seats to enhance the sense of refinement the period is known for. The curvaceous pierced back splat exhibits an openwork (stylized) palmette design below a thick upper rail carved with a diamond shape that is emphasized by natural darkening of the wood. The sage-green upholstery retains a luxurious and inviting touch (although a bit worn in places) both to the hand as well as when seated for dining and used around a game table. Internal structure remains firm and supportive. Note how the regal fleur-de-lis motif in the fabric has a rose-gold shimmer under certain lighting that looks celebratory for any occasion.
