A remarkable Swedish case antique, this two hundred and thirty year old chest of drawers totally embodies the Gustavian style. King Gustav of Sweden was taken with Parisian style and borrowed many aspects of the couture du jour in France: King Louis XVI in particular. He assuaged the style to suit his Swedish subjects, as the formal finishes of Louis’ French palaces were not practical for everyday Swedes. Gustavian furniture pieces are sometimes referred to as “Swedish Country” given their informal painted finishes. Like this chest, Gustavian pieces will often take the form of French Louis XVI furniture, but be finished in a burnished, painted finish that is almost always light in color. This chest is painted a lovely blue/green-gray and has a top that is painted a slate gray, with some of the blue/green present. The drawers have lovely carved panel details, are flanked by fluted channels, while the skirt and feet are ornamented with dentilated carved details. The drawers have steel ring pulls and are without the keys needed to operate their locks. This wonderful Swedish chest dates to 1790 and although it is over two centuries old, it will breathe new life into any room it graces. Cherished for their versatility, this Gustavian case antique has the unique ability to both smarten a simple space and temper one with more formal decor.

A collection of merchant painted counters from a 19th Century French pastry shop. This rare and outstanding group of counters would transform your everyday kitchen or shop. The shop counter is paneled on three sides with geometric motifs and the original layered and worn paint finish. The backside is open for storage with two drawers, one with fitted sections and a single shelf. The original white marble top hangs over its base making a durable and large work surface.
