A remarkable Swedish case antique, this two hundred and thirty year old chest of drawers totally embodies the Gustavian style. King Gustav of Sweden was taken with Parisian style and borrowed many aspects of the couture du jour in France: King Louis XVI in particular. He assuaged the style to suit his Swedish subjects, as the formal finishes of Louis’ French palaces were not practical for everyday Swedes. Gustavian furniture pieces are sometimes referred to as “Swedish Country” given their informal painted finishes. Like this chest, Gustavian pieces will often take the form of French Louis XVI furniture, but be finished in a burnished, painted finish that is almost always light in color. This chest is painted a lovely blue/green-gray and has a top that is painted a slate gray, with some of the blue/green present. The drawers have lovely carved panel details, are flanked by fluted channels, while the skirt and feet are ornamented with dentilated carved details. The drawers have steel ring pulls and are without the keys needed to operate their locks. This wonderful Swedish chest dates to 1790 and although it is over two centuries old, it will breathe new life into any room it graces. Cherished for their versatility, this Gustavian case antique has the unique ability to both smarten a simple space and temper one with more formal decor.

An expansive 19th century French enfilade, Louis Philippe period, made of glowing fruitwood and stretching over 10’ across to anchor a dining room or living space. Three very long planks span the top surface, capped with breadboard ends. The layout of the cabinetry places a stack of four drawers in the center (instead of the frieze) flanked by spacious cabinets on the left and right. Of the drawers, all open by lion-head ring pull hardware with the top drawer retaining a working lock and key. The paneled doors are accentuated by thin strips of dark inlay, opening by individual locks and keys behind anthemion escutcheons to reveal one shelf per cabinet, 48 ½” W x 17” D. A magnificent 19th century French enfilade of classic Empire styling, made of richly figured mahogany adorned with gilt bronze accents. Its original marble top of black stone is speckled with tiny, fossilized inclusions underneath the expected scratches from time and use. In the overhanging frieze below, a row of three drawers open by hidden cupped handles along the bottom edge (the keyholes are only decorative without a key present). The case is animated by abstract, swirling grain patterns of the wood in those luminous brown tones mahogany is prized for. In the storage compartment of the case one finds a wide cabinet behind the left and center doors opened by gripping the pillar in the absence of a key. Flamed grain draws the eye into the expansive whorls of rich coloration that radiate from the center. The clean, straight lines allow this timeless design to fit any number of traditional and transitional decorating tastes for clothing, linens, and other household storage. Behind the locking doors are three adjustable shelves, 12 ⅛” deep, one key included. French 19th Century Marble Column Pedestal

A fabulous late 19th century carved marble display pedestal from France, to elevate precious artwork, décor, or greenery in your interior. Geometric elements distinguish the capital and base from the smooth roundness of the columnar shaft. By the artist’s hand and tools the white stone with gray veining has been shaped to subtle rings around the circumference as the pillar widens from the top to the base. The abacus (the flat top surface) is shaped as a square with chamfered corners, echoed below by the octagonal plinth. Evidence of time & use includes scratches, small edge chips and subtle changes in the tone of the marble which has been gently cleaned to appreciate the natural characteristics. Swedish 18th Century Gustavian Painted Chest of Drawers

A remarkable Swedish case antique, this two hundred and thirty year old chest of drawers totally embodies the Gustavian style. King Gustav of Sweden was taken with Parisian style and borrowed many aspects of the couture du jour in France: King Louis XVI in particular. He assuaged the style to suit his Swedish subjects, as the formal finishes of Louis’ French palaces were not practical for everyday Swedes. Gustavian furniture pieces are sometimes referred to as “Swedish Country” given their informal painted finishes. Like this chest, Gustavian pieces will often take the form of French Louis XVI furniture, but be finished in a burnished, painted finish that is almost always light in color. This chest is painted a lovely blue/green-gray and has a top that is painted a slate gray, with some of the blue/green present. The drawers have lovely carved panel details, are flanked by fluted channels, while the skirt and feet are ornamented with dentilated carved details. The drawers have steel ring pulls and are without the keys needed to operate their locks. This wonderful Swedish chest dates to 1790 and although it is over two centuries old, it will breathe new life into any room it graces. Cherished for their versatility, this Gustavian case antique has the unique ability to both smarten a simple space and temper one with more formal decor.
