The simple top surface lifts off its base to an open storage area. The facade of this interesting case piece has two horizontal panels painted a worn dark blue. Hooks are found on each end that unlock the front of the bed to then extend forward creating space for a mattress. Fans of the pioneering furniture designer Emile-Jacque Ruhlmann will delight in this glamorous French Art Deco period chaise. A swooping crest of a seat back rises from the left side to form the right-facing arm, over a single bench cushion outlined by the walnut frame. More elegant than a fainting couch, the effect is a sculptural statement to use as a daybed or chaise longue in a bedroom or living space, becoming one’s favorite place to lounge and relax. Currently the chaise is upholstered with a nailhead trim around tan faux suede of fair condition although the internal cushioning remains firm and comfortable. Recently tightened and upholstered with new cushions and a muslin fabric, it is ready for its final layer of upholstery. The whole is lifted on Louis XVI style fluted and tapered legs.
