Dimensions: 13” H x 38 ½” W x 2 ⅝” D

The main body of the work features a bold red ground that is streaked with veining like an exotic marble, punctuated at the bottom corners with two raised panels in another faux marble technique using streaks of blue. High-relief carvings along the top crest project with exuberant acanthus, scrolled, and swag motifs covered in a magnificent gold leaf to balance the horizontal orientation. The left-side scroll is missing and the wood variably patinated but the overdoor accessory remains an exciting addition to any interior for any number of decorative placements. One eye-hook on the back for hanging. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. $6,500.0049.88"H x 35.75"W x 0.75"D
Dimensions: 49 ⅞” H x 35 ¾” W x ¾” D
A dramatic Italian painting on canvas from circa 1820, using the negative space of a black background to make the still-life composition at the center pop with more dimension and intrigue. Romantic blossoms spill from the mouth of the urn hanging over the figural register which depicts a pair of Greco-Roman characters joined by a cherub. The border around the edges of the stretched canvas is not paint but carefully decoupaged strips of paper in a wavy design of complementary tones. Regarding the appearance: the background shows areas of water spots, craquelure, and separation. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. Written on either side of the door is “vale” and “vade” which might be from Latin (and subsequent Romance languages) as a kind of well-wishing/goodbye. Faint signature and date to the lower right. Sold unframed, wired on the back to hang as-is. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition as they are an essential part of the description.

French Late 19th Century Framed Aquatint Print
$495.0021.63"H x 24"W x 1"D
Dimensions: 21 ⅝” H x 24” W x 1” D
An extraordinary French 19th century framed aquatint (print) of a rider on horseback crossing a stone bridge toward a small homestead in the distance, past the treeline along the shore. It is a moody, melancholy scene shrouded in the dim light of early morning reflected by the stillness of the water. Above, thick clouds appear to yield to the breaking dawn which reveal the blue skies above. The composition and techniques draw comparison to the Impressionist mannerisms of the famous French artist Alexandre Louise Jacob however the stamp of authenticity from the printing house, Cercle de la Librairie in Paris, would place this much earlier. Indistinct signature and title in pencil on the bottom margin. Matting includes a “French line” pinstriping to complement the aqueous translucency of the color palette; framed under glass in a stunning acanthus-motif molding of gold gilt with exposed red bole. English Reproduction of La Baigneuse or Venus Bathing
$5,600.0065"H x 18"W x 23"D
Dimensions: 65” H x 18” W x 23” D
English, early 20th century or late 19th century reproduction of the masterpiece “La Baigneuse” (Venus Emerging from the Bath) inspired after a circa 1767 work by Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain which the original now lives at the Louvre in Paris. Even his version bears a strong resemblance to a Renaissance work from the 16th century by Giambologna, so it is remarkable that such an image to symbolize beauty continues to inspire nearly 500 years later. This statue is cast, reconstituted stone that once graced a garden. Note the dark patina from exposure to the elements shrouding her bare shoulders while the gathered fabric she dries herself with is still mostly white, underscoring her association with love, fertility, and desire. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition and be sure to check our other listings for more antique garden elements.
English Reproduction of the Venus Italica
$5,600.0068.38"H x 18"W x 23"D
Dimensions: 68 ⅜” H x 18” W x 23” D
English, early 20th century or late 19th century reproduction of the masterpiece Venus Italica, originally sculpted from marble circa 1802 by Antonio Canova to replace the more famous Venus sculpture seized by Napoleon. This example is a cast (reconstituted stone) work that graced a garden with her beauty. Note the dark patina from exposure to the elements that shrouds her bare shoulders while the gathered fabric she clings to her front is still mostly white, underscoring her association with love, fertility, and desire. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition and be sure to check our other listings for more antique garden elements.
French 19th Century Set of 3 Hand-carved Marble Corbels
$6,500.0038.25"H x 8"W x 6.50"D
Dimensions: 38 ¼” H x 8” W x 6 ½” D
French 19th century–or earlier–ensemble of three hand-carved stone corbels. They are substantial pieces, likely used as decorative supports or architectural elements around a fireplace or softening the geometry of a roofline. It is truly extraordinary how the artist has decorated these elongated panels with naturalistic floral and leaf designs–which include roses, lilies, sunflowers, and ivy–rendered in tactile softness that belies the density of the stone. Outside of an architectural function, the grouping could be displayed in one’s home like stela from the ancient world: sculptural markers to guide the way or commemorate a significant event. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition. Sold as a set of three.
