A rustic French 20th century stoneware flagon or cruche, traditionally used as a bottle for transporting and storing liquids, such as olive oil. The hand of the potter has imparted organic variation to the form with a wabi-sabi quality of utilitarian authenticity, using a salt glaze which creates movement across the ribbed surface of the bottle in dramatic shifts of color from deep, earthy browns and reds to the neutral tan of the stoneware clay. The bulbous vessel uses a single handle to aid in pouring liquid out of the narrow mouth at the top that would have been corked. The cylindrical “bowl” of the vessel has straight, tall walls–very similar to a celery vase of the late 19th/early 20th centuries–flaring out to a broad lip at the top. This example has been decorated with an applied ruffle in two rings around the exterior giving it personality and flair even without a bouquet inside. The cylindrical glass forms are a deep amethyst-cranberry tone with delicate illustrations in painted gold of branches, such as those from a willow tree, reaching around the fronts of the vessels. A slight hourglass silhouette flares at the base, alluding to the organic inspiration like the trunk of a tree, while also offering greater stability when filled with a fresh bouquet of flowers. A pair of French Empire period Old Paris Porcelain vases, circa 1810, with painted landscapes and figural scenes on each side. The Classical amphora profile features a gold-banded mouth at the top, transitioning to the narrow neck and tapering body framed by a pair of handles with low-relief caryatid faces in place of the openings, lifted by square bases all accented in gold gilt trim. The landscape imagery–coordinating but not identical–is of a lush and tranquil environment in an earth tone palette. On the reverse side of each vase are a pair of figures, again that are unique but similar, locked in what appears to be a tense exchange.
