  • Collection of 3 French Pastry Shop Counters

    A collection of merchant painted counters from a 19th Century French pastry shop. This rare and outstanding group of counters would transform your everyday kitchen or shop. The shop counter is paneled on three sides with geometric motifs and the original layered and worn paint finish. The backside is open for storage with two drawers, one with fitted sections and a single shelf. The original white marble top hangs over its base making a durable and large work surface. There are two counters each with 9 drawers that were once built into the walls of the pastry shop. One chest is slightly larger than the other, clearly custom to the wall they were once attached to. Each chest has its original worn and layed paint finish and white marble top. All three counters pair very well together, and rest on a plinth painted platform. All the doors display hand rolled glass panes sounded in detailed inlay. All of the doors have functioning clock keys and locks, something we have never seen before! The door fronts have the most remarkable designs depicting overflowing scrolling baskets of flowers. The interior painted black shelves in the top measure 13-¾”deep.     This handsome corner cabinet from 19th century Sweden is constructed with a characteristic neoclassical shape. The worn light blue paint is original to the piece and gives it a wonderful patina. A nicely carved cornice tops the whole, with capital-like details and canted corners. Fluting details flank the sides and center of the cabinets on the top and bottom portions. Both sets of cabinets lock and have an interior latch to secure the doors. The top features the same worn blue paint on the interior and shelves. The topmost shelf is uniquely shaped and carved, possibly for the purpose of storing tall candles. A shapley opening graces the midsection and adds a nice amount of detail.     Masterfull artistic talent was employed to create this stunning Italian canape. The sofa’s back could be mistaken for a canvas, given the finely detailed artwork that graces its surface. A central cartouche encircles a sweet bouquet of potted flowers, with tassels and filigree subjects visible. The back has gilt finials that flank its central painted crest rail. Gold gilt accents can also be found atop the armrests and ornamental joinery dies. The settee is currently outfitted with an upholstered cushion that is covered in a golden champagne-colored silk fabric with a cross-hatched laurel embroidery pattern. The green painted frame is wonderfully patinated, with delicate garlands painted atop in a darker shade of blue/green and other golden embellishments. Six tapered legs lift the canape and also bear the beautifully painted detailing.

  • French 19th Century Provincial Horloge Case Clock

    A carved crest of a basket with flowers crowns this heavily carved oak case clock, c. mid 1800’s.  A glazed-panel door just below the crest is flanked by sides with pierced half-moon carvings and houses the painted enamel clock face with Roman numerals and pierced brass hands.  The pressed brass fronton surrounding the clock’s face is quite stunning and has a horn of plenty, rising sun, basket of flowers, floral and foliate motifs.  The clock has a weight driven escapement and strikes on the hour, two minutes past the hour and half hour.  Just below is the rectilinear raised and recessed panel columnar door with extensive carvings and a glazed cabochon revealing the brass bob.  The cabinet has basket, floral, ribbon, guilloche, pearl, urn and lea & berry motif carvings.  The whole sits on a plinth base.  This clock has been cleaned and is in working condition.

White muslin is fixed to the frames with visible upholsterers nails and is ready for the fabric of your choice or left as is depending on your style.     A heavily bearded Friedrich Engels stares into the distance in this massive 19th century German canvas portrait, 1820-1895. Engels was one of the leading political economists, philosophers, political theoreticians and revolutionary socialist of the 19th Century.  Donning a three piece suit, this co-founder of Marxism is dressed to kill. His beard, although large and prominent, has been managed and kept. The red backdrop provides excellent contrast, pushing Mr. Engels to the front of the painting and is indicative of his politics. Red is the color of the far left political parties across most of the globe, except in the US.  The work is done on a large piece of loose canvas, probably to display at a presentation hall or similar venue for a political event or speech.  This painting is not framed and is attached to rod, therefore it can be rolled for easy transport.

Its body is encircled by a gilt bronze band with a crashing wave design and supports ten gilt bronze arms with acanthus leaf details. Four chains are attached to the crown.     This one of a kind armoire was custom made to showcase the fabulous pair of 19th century painted boiserie panels that now serve as the doors. Boiserie panels rose in popularity during the 18th century as a way to emulate the grandeur of the French nobility, but they also served many practical purposes like heat insulation and noise control. A marvelous, dawn- hued scene overlooking a vast countryside depicts a variety of avian species in the foreground. Antiqued brass hardware perfectly compliments the colorscape of the paintings. The left door features an interior hook to hold it closed while the right is secured with a strong magnetic door catch. The interior is painted a warm walnut color and easily houses 5 adjustable shelves with a depth of 14”. The exterior was painted to match the existing color of the door panels. The whole is slightly raised on bracket feet and adds a nice shape to the overall body. This bookcase must have been used in an office and there are two shelves with slides, most likely used to pull out a printer or other electronic devices.     This is a massive French 19th Century mirror from the main hall of the Archbishop Palace Rouen, Normandy, France.  This mirror is over 10’ tall and more than 6’ wide.  Both the frame and mirror show aging.  The original mercury mirror plate has oxidized, creating an undeniable detail in this antique mirror.  The lines on this mirror fall where wood support pieces meet on the back of the mirror.  We can assume over a period of time, moist air flowing through the spaces behind the mirror caused the mercury to oxidize and flake off the glass.
