French 19th Century Solid Oak Buffet à Deux Corps
$5,600.0099.75"H x 57.75"W x 24.75"D
Dimensions: 99 ¾” H x 57 ¾” W x 24 ¾” D
A French solid oak buffet à deux corps from the 19th century, Louis XV in style, with baroque carvings to add depth to the paneled doors, and serpentine apron that together give this large storage piece its historic character. Under the linear crown is a stylized garland carved into the frieze over a pair of doors that mirror each other’s calligraphic outline around the paneling. Each door hangs on steel barrel hinges to support the weight, and use scrolling hardware that coordinates beautifully with the vine and foliate motifs elsewhere. The doors open by working lock and (massive) key to reveal an interior that has been crudely tacked with the most charming floral printed cotton in bold red & white. Three shelves range in depth from 13 ¼”-14 ¾”. In the lower cabinet–protruding forward beyond the upper body–past a working lock and key is an interior fitted with a single shelf, 18 ⅜” deep. The same textile has been used to dress the back of the cabinet as well–see the image gallery for the immersive effect this has when all the doors are open! The sinuous lines of the swelled apron transition into carved escargot feet, another signature of the Louis XV taste for refined, yet playful touches. From its graceful curves to robust proportions and charming patina, this Louis XV armoire will bring a comforting presence to any home. It has been cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax to be ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images to see more and the current condition. Two keys included.

French 19th Century Forged Iron Andirons
$995.0027.50"H x 11.50"W x 20.25"D
Dimensions: 27 ½” H x 11 ½” W x 20 ¼” D
A sculptural pair of French 19th century cast iron fireplace andirons, or chenets, that hold as much fascination as the roaring fire behind them. Stylistically they fall between the brutalism of Gothic Revival and creative expression of Art Nouveau: square “baskets” at the top of each pillar for warming emanate from thick rods equipped with scrolling spit hooks and a half-moon ornament of hammered texture that may also be functional and not simply decorative. In between the bowed front legs is a ribbon of steel pinched to whimsical arches to complement the curvaceous designs elsewhere. The hand-forged rod creating the back leg is how the burning logs are elevated; naturally the pair have developed a reddish-brown patina from oxidation of the iron and more than a century of exposure to high heat. The bulbous vessel uses a single handle to aid in pouring liquid out of the narrow mouth at the top that would have been corked. For the modern interior this work of ceramic art is a wonderful artifact of culinary history to add to one’s collection or kitchen décor. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition.

$395.004.63"H x 13.25"W x 13.25"D
Dimensions: 4 ⅝” H x 13 ¼” W x 13 ¼” D

Crafted in terracotta and finished with a buttery gold slip glaze, the bowl features whimsical (if not symbolic) crosshatched pyramids in burnt orange, and parallel lines dividing the interior into four quadrants occupied by dark green wave motifs. The ruffled “pie crust” rim is gently pinched to round out the decorative effects, but like similar fajalauza bowls from Spain this piece would have been used regularly in the kitchen and not just to display.
