  • French Early 20th Century Male Nude by Didier-Tourné

    $5,500.00

    37.50"H x 31.25"W x 1.50"D

    Dimensions: 37 ½” H x 31 ¼” W x 1 ½” D

An early 20th-century gilt framed oil on canvas painting by French artist Jean Didier-Tourné (1882-1967), depicting a lean male nude in a kind of contraposto stance as he turns away in silhouette to the viewer, arms behind his back. The background palette is deliberately muted, creating a horizon line at his waist contrasting the gray-green upper against a burnt sienna below. Overall the minimal composition is captivating for its tense juxtapositions, his turned body is not only a figure study of human anatomy but one of shadow & light as the muscles are dimly illuminated. Signed on the back of the canvas along with “Rome” to put in local/historical context, no visible signature on the front. Framed by a gold gilt molding with thin reeded design. • English Circa 1900 Cast Stone Medici Urn with Figurative Motif

    $3,200.00

    36"H x 24"W x 24"D

    Dimensions: 36” H x 24” W x 24” D

The iconic style has been reproduced as garden urns for hundreds of years to signify an educated taste for Classical art. This example features a flared rim over a magnificently sculpted bas-relief wrapping the exterior with figural narrative, what appears to be a bacchanalia under grape vines. Pairs of satyr faces (or Bacchus himself) mark opposing sides of the vessel where it widens again into a pronounced gadroon motif before narrowing into the fluted base. The urn rests on a square plinth to give it a stronger sense of balance and permanence in any indoor or outdoor setting. The pale, reconstituted stone has developed an organic patina with soft variation in spotted grayscale, which adds definition and emphasis on the beautiful proportions. An expressive Biedermeier period chaise lounge–also called a “recamier”–dating to circa 1820 Sweden, in the manner of the famous maker Karl Johan. Resembling a gondola in silhouette, the left-arm rises from the corner to develop into an exaggerated wave with spiral (very much in the French Restauration taste for scrolled arms) before cresting again to make the lower arm on the right side. Maple wood, by its natural luminosity and elusive grain patterns, was an ideal choice in constructing the frame to underscore the sense of movement happening throughout. Currently the upholstery is a medium blue geometric jacquard that is in fair condition. Note there have been a few professional repairs made to stabilize the outer lobes of both arms but overall the frame is heavy and sturdy. Below the diamond-carved panels at the lower corners of the bench, robust turned feet elevate the frame as the final complement to the mastery in carving seen above.
