The base has a large drawer and the maker’s badge that has his name, R. Lerat, and even his shop’s address at 18 R’de Bouville in Nantes, France.

    A beautiful hand-painted stool from 1900’s England. The antique is upholstered in a creamy gold silk fabric that is affixed to the frame using the same creamy gold-colored gimp tape. The frame is ebonized, with the four legs having a cabriole form and the apron being shaped. The ebony base has been masterfully hand-painted with gorgeous flowers, birds, foliage, and decorative filigree. This stool was greatly influenced by the Chinoiserie movement that was going on in England at the time. Hardwood has become exposed where some of the ebony has been lost, giving the stool its antique character.

    A brilliant 19th century gold gilt mantle mirror, made in France circa 1870. The mirror is large and beautiful. The frame is ornamented with bundles of flowers that can be found in its corners and sides. The gilt finish has experienced some loss due to time and hundreds of feather dustings, exposing some of the red bole substratum. Often referred to as “French Red” this facet of gilt mirrors is sought after. The frame is trimmed in a twisted cording motif. The mirror has its original mercury glass, which has some foxing and sparkles galore. The “diamond dust” has become separated from the backing and fallen into the glass. Gravity has situated much of the sparkles along the mirror’s bottom.

    A heavily bearded Friedrich Engels stares into the distance in this massive 19th century German canvas portrait, 1820-1895. Engels was one of the leading political economists, philosophers, political theoreticians and revolutionary socialist of the 19th Century.  Donning a three piece suit, this co-founder of Marxism is dressed to kill. His beard, although large and prominent, has been managed and kept. The red backdrop provides excellent contrast, pushing Mr. Engels to the front of the painting and is indicative of his politics. Red is the color of the far left political parties across most of the globe, except in the US.  The work is done on a large piece of loose canvas, probably to display at a presentation hall or similar venue for a political event or speech.  This painting is not framed and is attached to rod, therefore it can be rolled for easy transport.

It is lifted by four feet that have been styled in the same fashion as feet found on many Louis Philippe pieces.     A stunning, large brass table scale, made near the turn of the century, England. The scale is no longer operational, but still makes an mighty impact on a space. The scale is made of brass, with two copper weigh pans. The shaped arms support the hanging pans, attached by linked brass strands. As seen in the detailed photos, each copper pan has been stamped numerous times with a seal, bearing a year, surrounded by Greek letters. The English crown can also be seen stamped into the copper. These dates signify when the scale was last calibrated. The brass column shaft sits atop a brass pedestal, which sits atop stacked brass, which sits upon a piece of gray marble. The entire scale is lifted by brass ball feet. The scale includes the weights with which it is pictured.

The cream is then poured off the top with the small spout found on the pot’s lip. This antique bowl is in excellent condition, with both handles intact. The interior has been glazed a beautiful ochre yellow. This glaze prevented the milk from being absorbed by the terra cotta. Today, this wonderful bowl would make a fantastic fruit bowl or decorative object about the house.

    An interesting adjustable pole screen, from England, circa 1830. During the warmer months, when fireplaces were not in use, pole screens would hide or at least decorate unsightly, soot-filled fireboxes. A framed needlework depicting a pastoral scene with felled tree is supported by a mahogany pole that allows the screen to be moved up or down. The pole has a decorative turned end that rests on a mahogany tripodal base and showing some wear from use. An elegant antique work of art.

    This unique apparatus has a lot to do with the history and shaping of French history and culture: the wine bottle corker. This green painted wine corker, made around 1890, was used in a winery in Bordeaux. Wine production is intrinsic to French culture and is taken very seriously. Many aspects of French winemaking have remained unchanged for centuries. Great pride is taken in the wines produced in each growing region. Once a vineyard’s grapes have been harvested, pressed, and aged, the resulting wine will be bottled and finally sealed with a cork, using an iron wine corker just like this one.

    A stunning pair of large, brass candle sconces from the earliest part of the 19th century, made in the Netherlands. These immense Dutch fixtures have extraordinary scroll form arms that have been adorned with hammered brass acanthus leaves that grow like vines on the burly brass scrolls. The sconces allow for large candles, which will look breathtaking once they have melted down, with dripping wax collected in brass bobeches. One bobeche has been slightly damaged. The brass has an aged patina that is has acquired in its 200+ year lifetime. c.1800.
