Of elegant proportions, having a high supportive back, a shaped stuffed seat, padded armrests, reeded carving around the polished wooden frame, and raised on splayed feet. Gently worn coral and floral vintage upholstery is hand nail tacked into place creating a beaded affect with the round nailheads. The high back reclines using the two metal handles under each arm to give the chair four comfortable positions. Original castors are on the two front feet making it easy to move the chair around. High gloss glaze overall with a decorative crane on the rim of the platter. On the reverse is the mark “Maple and Co. London” with imprinted numbering. Maple and Co. was one of the largest and most successful British furniture and decorative arts retailers in the late 19th Century. An additional imprint of a Caduceus, the registered trademark by Powell and Bishop, an English china and earthenware manufacturer (1876-1891) helps to date this piece to the Edwardian era. To expand the top and raise the leaves, the leaves are lifted, and the apron itself is hinged midway to swing out – with one leg attached – to create a 90 angle that braces the top, when up. This ingenious design is simple and effective and negates the need for additional table legs that can impede the knees and feet of seated individuals. It could be used as a console, center or occasional table, but one of the many things that makes this table special is its ability to convert into a felt-topped game table. The shaped and impeccably inlaid top is hinged and will unfold to double in size and reveal a green felt playing surface, ideal for cards, dominoes and other games. When opened, the table has dimensions: 29 ½” H x 39 ¼” W x 42 ½” D. The table’s drawer opens to provide support for the top when laid open. When closed, it can be locked using the one key present. The table’s top features inlaid brass and mother of pearl in a variety of motifs including birds, filigree, floral and foliate splays and flourishes and has been modified over time. A bank of five small drawers are located above the dresser’s surface, all with turned wooden knobs. Just beneath this surface, three larger drawers are positioned above the large storage cavity which is enclosed behind the dresser’s paneled doors. The doors and drawers all sport large, turned wood knobs. The interior is equipped with a single fixed shelf. The antique is raised on wonderfully turned ball feet.

A shaped skirt complements the splayed front feet. There are no keys present.
