This Louis Philippe commode from France, 19th century, has mesmerizing burled, bookmatched walnut drawer fronts with dense ripples of grain pattern that flow from one to the other for a unified effect. On the top surface, the white marble shows thin wisps of gray veining under a softly etched patina and rounded edges. Note that there is one distinct patch of ochre-toned patina. A stack of four drawers open by working locks (sharing a key between them) fitted with ornate escutcheons whose foliate themes are the perfect complement to the tones and organic swirls of the drawer fronts. A cheerful piece of history and architecture, this enormous Louis Philippe style mirror dating to the late 19th century was originally part of the decor in a French bistro. Arched corners round out the wide, rectangular form of the painted frame; as found, the likely gold gilt finish was covered in a wash of burnt orange paint more recently. Where the paint has chipped off to reveal the wood underneath one might notice a carved foliate pattern–typical of the Louis Philippe style–with other areas of patina that contribute to the overall artistic flair of the mirror. The original mirror plate is speckled with several constellations of foxing and dark oxidation that unifies the overall effect to make an eyecatching statement in any interior. A gorgeous 19th century French mahogany secretary style desk, designed as a classic Louis Philippe commode incorporating the work surface and storage compartments into the top “drawer” above four actual drawers. The Saint Anne marble slab on top shows mesmerizing movement in the swirls of black and gray stone, finished along the perimeter with a low groove. Behind a working lock (and key) is the flap door which becomes the writing desk inlaid with worn black leather outlined in gold tooling. The workspace is fitted with pigeonhole compartments along the back plus two small pen drawers to the left and a locking drawer to the right using its own unique key. In the chest below are three wide drawers all with working locks that share one key between them. This unique commode has one more surprise: a shallow, hidden drawer at the base! Original glass panes are texturized by waves and small bubbles that complement the animated striations in the mahogany wood grain. Behind the locking doors are six interior shelves (11 ½” deep) that are adjustable on sawtooth brackets to easily reconfigure as needed. The left and center doors function together, representing one, wide vitrine whereas the right side is separate. Below are a series of three doors enclosing the lower cabinet that follow the order of the upper body: left and center doors work in tandem by a lock & key while the right side is separate. Both compartments have an adjustable shelf, approximately 17” deep. Note the lower right door does not have a lock, needing the shared key to pull open.
