Although this contemporary French oil on panel is more recent in age (circa 1998), the style and subject matter can be traced back to the French and German Expressionist painters like George Rouault and Fernand Leger of the nearly 20th century. In a vibrant palette of intense orange and green complemented with mauve, the composition features a pair of vases–or maybe a vase and a pitcher–filled with mixed bouquets of small flowers that are guarded by the effigy of a female figure whose disproportionately large hands shield her chest and lower waist.
