The subject is a young woman with fair hair and skin, her classic Flemish profile set off by a red hat decorated with ostrich feathers and a gaze concentrated toward the left of the scene. Behind her is a surreal landscape of pastel blue, pink, and yellow perhaps the waning hours of daylight. Around her is wrapped a diaphanous pink shawl exposing a gold necklace with a locket, which must have some importance considering the level of detail applied. The subject, a sophisticated woman of a certain age and fair complexion, is illuminated by the sun coming in from the nearby window, forming a corona of her hair as she sits in a blue bergere by an open secretary desk. She stops her correspondence to indulge the artist by sitting for this portrait, her left hand (note the red fingernails matching the red of her lips) holding a book.
