  • English Victorian Reproduction of the Venus Italica

    $5,600.00

    63.50"H x 16"W x 14"D

    Dimensions: 63 ½” H x 16” W x 14” D

English, late 19th century reproduction of the masterpiece Venus Italica, sculpted from marble circa 1812 by Antonio Canova to replace the original Venus sculpture seized by Napoleon for the Louvre. This example is a cast (reconstituted stone) work that graced a garden with her beauty; note the dark patina from exposure to the elements that shrouds her bare shoulders. The gathered sheet of fabric she clings to her front (in modesty) is still mostly white–undrescoring her symbolism of love, fertility, and desire. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. • English Reproduction of La Baigneuse or Venus Bathing

    $5,600.00

    65"H x 18"W x 23"D

    Dimensions: 65” H x 18” W x 23” D

English, early 20th century or late 19th century reproduction of the masterpiece “La Baigneuse” (Venus Emerging from the Bath) inspired after a circa 1767 work by Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain which the original now lives at the Louvre in Paris. Even his version bears a strong resemblance to a Renaissance work from the 16th century by Giambologna, so it is remarkable that such an image to symbolize beauty continues to inspire nearly 500 years later. This statue is cast, reconstituted stone that once graced a garden. Note the dark patina from exposure to the elements shrouding her bare shoulders while the gathered fabric she dries herself with is still mostly white, underscoring her association with love, fertility, and desire.
