  • French Vintage Framed Floral Still Life

    $250.00

    19.25"H x 16.25"W x 0.75"D

    Dimensions: 19 ¼” H x 16 ¼” W x ¾” D

A spirited French oil on canvas painting of vintage age & condition. To call the work a “still-life” is a disservice to the vitality and celebration of color happening within the scene; the vase at center overflows with bursts of pink, orange, yellow, and white blossoms in impasto technique reminding the viewer of the abundance and excitement of gardens at the height of summer. This small painting will surely command attention in any gallery wall collection but has the presence to stand on its own as well. Currently set within a simple wood picture frame and ready to hang in your interior. Dedicated by the artist to their mother, for Christmas 1976, on the reverse as well as a signature on the front. This endearing vintage French painting on board of two pheasants is sure to put a smile on your face, transporting the viewer to a rural countryside where the imagination is free to roam. Above, in the cloudless blue sky, is a giant yellow butterfly larger than the female pheasant with pink antennae. No visible signature; framed and ready to hang in your interior. Protected under glass and a simple black picture frame, ready to hang in your interior. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition. • French 19th Century Raised Embroidery of Madonna & Child

    $2,800.00

    50.75"H x 36.13"W x 1.38"D

    Dimensions: 50 ¾” H x 36 ⅛” W x 1 ⅜” D

An impressive work of textile art, this French 19th century raised gold embroidery of the Madonna & Child resembles liturgical vestments such as a cope or chasuble that a member of the clergy would wear to mass, applying the same techniques and quality to a more static image set within a wood frame. The appliqués are mounted on ivory silk with a moiré pattern that gives the illusion of faux bois, shifting and rippling in the light along with the metallic threads. Mary and the Christ child are rendered with handpainted faces and hands that achieve the kind of tenderness observed in Italian Renaissance art; they are wrapped in robes with a variety of textures & stiches to indicate the depth of gathered folds of fabric, including gold sequins, as she holds the child safely over the embroidered red serpent around her feet. The figural vignette is contained within orphrey or orfoi embroidered border of foliate and floral theme in gold, green, pale blue and red. Delicate, scrolling vines grow outward from the textile border across the negative space of ivory silk toward the ebonized, carved wood frame protecting the delicate work. Please view the detailed images to see more of this captivating example of ecclesiastical art, and the current condition.

  • French Vintage Reproduction Parthenon Frieze Panel

    $5,800.00

    42.25"H x 59.38"W x 4"D

    Dimensions: 42 ¼” H x 59 ⅜” W x 4” D

The Parthenon, that postcard image from the Acropolis of Athens, Greece, was once a great temple of white marble and a staggering program of sculptures to enhance the architecture from floor to ceiling. Built in the 5th century BCE for the goddess Athena, the structure is mostly in ruins now with its treasures lost, looted, or held in the collections of major museums. This piece is a 20th century French reproduction of one section of the pictorial frieze that would have wrapped around the interior structure (measuring over 500 feet altogether) telling a narrative about a procession toward the Acropolis involving many distinct characters, these two horsemen included. In this panel, two men on horseback make their way to the temple among the many others in the procession, note the animal hide draped on the rider to the right side with two clawed feet waving as they gallop along. Stamped on the left-facing edge by the Atelier de Moulage du Louvre (the plaster casting workshop at the Musee du Louvre, Paris). Please view the detailed images to see the current condition.

This touching portrait of a white horse by notable English artist Dominic Fels (circa 1958) is sure to put a smile on your face, transporting the viewer to a rural countryside. The dedication on the reverse identifies the subject as “True Blue”, an 11 year old gelding, along with the name of the horse’s owner and county of Somerset, though unclear if this was painted as a commission or a gift. Thoughtful attention to detail captures all the rustic textures of the stable including an impasto technique on the stacked stone, the pigment now exhibiting an allover craquelure pattern developed over time. Some areas of loss to the paint, please view the detailed images to see the current condition. Unframed.

  • French 19th Century Portrait of a Flower Girl

    $450.00

    21.75"H x 18"W x 1.13"D

    Dimensions: 21 ¾” H x 18” W x 1 ⅛” D

A heartwarming, late 19th century French oil-on-linen portrait of a young girl bearing a garland of pink flowers, painted in a technique of folk art naivety for emotional, rather than realistic, effect. Likely a posthumous portrait, sadly, works like these were common in the 19th century to immortalize the departed–a life cut short by unfortunate circumstances–in a medium (paint) that is more conducive to reflecting idealized memory than the truth of photography. Her fair complexion, the white dress with blue satin sash and matching necklace are a welcome counterpoint of youthful vitality against the bleak landscape behind her. The viewer is drawn in by her hazel eyes focused in an arresting stare. Sold unframed, please view the detailed images to see more of this curious painting.

  • English 1920s Large Charcoal Life Drawing

    $1,650.00

    37.13"H x 50.50"W x 0.75"D

    Dimensions: 37 ⅛” H x 50 ½” W x ¾” D

English 1920s framed charcoal figure study of a life drawing class in progress. With remarkable talent the artist has constructed a tense scene dominated by the nude male model at the front of the class (far right of the image) surrounded by students at their easels. The Art Deco time period is evident in the geometric repetition of the students, the pendant lights above, and statuesque pose of the model balanced by a tall staff to maintain his posture. By drawing some of the figures as looking out toward the viewer, and the model turned to face them, the perceived wall containing the action dissolves to raise the question of who is studying whom. Signed and dated to the lower right (unclear); framed and matted without glass. Please view the detailed images to see more.

  • English 1920s Large Charcoal Life Drawing

    $1,650.00

    37.13"H x 50.50"W x 0.75"D

    Dimensions: 37 ⅛” H x 50 ½” W x ¾” D

This framed charcoal study from 1920s England draws the viewer into an academic landscape where students at their easels concentrate on figure studies, using busts and torso models as reference. The image is dense with figural subjects: the artists as fully-formed people to representations of the human form as sculptural works and the drawings in progress seen clipped to the easels. A hazy sepia tone infuses a warm glow to the otherwise shadowy and monochromatic composition, enhanced by a tactile quality to the paper. No visible signature; framed and matted without glass. Please view the detailed images.

  • English 20th Century Lounging Lady Painting

    $2,300.00

    23.75"H x 35.63"W x 0.88"D

    Dimensions: 23 ¾” H x 35 ⅝” W x ⅞” D

An empowering early to mid-20th century painting of a nude lady in repose, her Rubenesque body arranged tastefully in piles of draped fabric to accentuate each curve without being too salacious. The bright and cheerful color palette in yellow, lavender, and pale blue also underscores the feeling of positivity as evident in her confident expression. Signed on reverse and sold unframed.
