A vintage 20th century French washstand of white marble top with backsplash over a mahogany-tone (oak) storage cabinet including two drawers. The lightly patinated stone surface rises along the back to form a low backsplash, finished by a narrow shelf above (4 ½” deep) that is supported on beautifully carved brackets to the left and right sides. Light surface scratches are found on the marble due to age and use. The planks of the cabinetry are arranged in a beadboard technique with the doors angled in an eyecatching chevron pattern secured by a magnetic catch. Inside is one shelf, 17 ⅞” deep. Small, turned feet elevate the case from the floor in a classic French touch. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition.

To the right of the frieze is a shallow drawer located by a tiny brass ring pull. This curious and ingenious contraption is secured by a push button to release and guide the mirror back down. Three drawers in the lower body form a small chest to keep personal effects or grooming tools. Cleaned and polished with French paste wax to bring out the vanity’s distinctive features and excellent quality, such a sophisticated design could easily be displayed in living rooms as an occasional table or petite bar. Vanities have been a staple in women’s bedrooms for hundreds of years, and while modern bathroom vanities may have become more common, there’s still something special and luxurious about an antique vanity table. Fireside Antiques has a huge range of antique vanity tables that can bring a new sense of elegance to your bedroom.

Up to the Middle Ages, chests and boxes were the only types of storage available to most people. However, advances in woodworking meant that carpenters could make more elaborate and useful designs, such as cabinets and shelves.

While most nobles would store their cosmetics in small, decorative boxes, the 17th century led to the rise of dressing tables, which combined a table with shelves and a mirror. These were equally popular with men and women — men used them predominantly while shaving and grooming, while women used them to get ready for important events.

Vanity tables became increasingly ornate and complex as woodworkers competed to gain the attention of rich clients. That’s why many antique vanity tables are packed with decorative features, including gilt mirrors, ivory or gold inlays, curlicues, and even hidden compartments.

However, despite all of these embellishments, the basic components of the vanity remain the same: a chair, a dresser containing storage compartments for cosmetics, and a mirror.

Why Use an Antique Vanity?

Dedicated vanity tables have fallen out of fashion, and most of us use bathroom vanities or walk-in closets. However, if you need more than just a space to do your hair and makeup, an antique vanity can be a conversation piece and an excellent platform to display your expensive beauty products. Most vanities have compartments for cosmetics and even jewelry, making them perfect organizing tools if you have many products and no place to store them.
