This early 20th century still life is a classic composition of mixed fruits and vessels on a wood table, however the moody lighting conditions show the remarkable talent and perceptive observations of the artist, Aurélien Dehon. Arranged before a murky background, a ceramic pitcher is softly illuminated by the light coming from a nearby window which is barely reflected on the dark brown demijohn to the right. In the foreground is a white platter of fruit that appears to be bananas and apples. A complementary gold gilt frame (repaired) protects the delicate work, which shows its age in a craquelure texture, some loss of pigment, and a small hole near the mouth of the pitcher. A spirited French oil on canvas painting of vintage age & condition. To call the work a “still-life” is a disservice to the vitality and celebration of color happening within the scene; the vase at center overflows with bursts of pink, orange, yellow, and white blossoms in impasto technique reminding the viewer of the abundance and excitement of gardens at the height of summer. This small painting will surely command attention in any gallery wall collection but has the presence to stand on its own as well. A charming vintage French landscape painting–elongated to a wide panorama–to appreciate the unspoiled beauty of the Ain countryside (Ain is a department in Eastern France) where a mother, two children, a goat and perhaps the grandmother can be seen walking a dirt path through a clearing in the tree line. French vintage framed landscape painting on board of a mountain range with a river flowing through the steep valley and a bridge crossing to a small village. The contemporary palette appears to be drawing from Cézanne’s novel technique of layering paint that afterward became known as Cubism, a modern approach to interactions of color and shadow emphasizing their emotional qualities over accuracy in natural forms. This vintage French oil painting that depicts the one of the great water parterre at the palace of Versailles speaks to the enduring power of the place, to still inspire wonder and amazement three centuries later. A verdant palette of blue and green complements the perspective of taking in a large pool of water reflecting the sky, surrounded by an impressive program of sculptures patinated to a deep verdigris, and enclosed by a dense row of trees around the court. A heartwarming, late 19th century French oil-on-linen portrait of a young girl bearing a garland of pink flowers, painted in a technique of folk art naivety for emotional, rather than realistic, effect. Likely a posthumous portrait, sadly, works like these were common in the 19th century to immortalize the departed–a life cut short by unfortunate circumstances–in a medium (paint) that is more conducive to reflecting idealized memory than the truth of photography. Her fair complexion, the white dress with blue satin sash and matching necklace are a welcome counterpoint of youthful vitality against the bleak landscape behind her. The various forms come to life in a tonal palette of ochre, terracotta, and coffee that give dimension to their unique shapes and perceived textures. This mid-20th century French still-life oil painting gives a modern twist to the classic composition of mixed fruits and bottles on a wood table. Arranged before a murky background of earth tones, the opaque demijohn at center (the kind used for storing wine) is joined by a decanter of brandy to the left and fluted drinking glass to the right. Luscious purple grapes to the far left are given a royal shade of blue while the grouping of pears to the right glow with the jolting effervescence of citrus. No visible signature. A lovely vintage French still life oil painting on panel of a red hyacinth in bloom, the vibrant hue of the flower is striking against the muted blue and beige stripe background. Artists will often conserve materials, painting over the same canvas or on both sides of a board; On the reverse side of this panel is an additional still life–quite different from the front in both mood & technique–depicting a bowl of pears and grapes in a palette of mostly green and pink with turquoise. We loved both sides so much we have selected a new silver frame that allows for easy rotation between the two sides as desired, hung from the incorporated hooks. A pair of vintage French watercolor paintings by Roger Caillete, one figurative and one landscape, they are set within matching gilt frames allowing them to be displayed together or separately to contemplate each one’s unique perspective and technique. In the first work, simply titled “Two Women Sitting in a Park” the human subjects are partially obscured by a tree which puts the focus on the tranquility of the lush & green setting more so than portraiture.
