A gorgeous 19th century French walnut chest of drawers–seven drawers to be exact-designed as a classic semainier in the Louis Philippe style with spellbinding patterns in the matched wood grain. The top surface is rounded at the corners and wrapped to begin the waterfall effect that carries the eye from one drawer to the next. A frieze drawer on the very top of the stack does not have a lock, but is easily opened by gently gripping the cupped handles. The six drawers in the body of the case feature stunning bookmatched fronts of radiating grain patterns that feel cohesive and expansive; they also share a key between them to secure the functioning locks. What looks like two individual drawers on the bottom are actually a single, very deep drawer for storing bulkier items like sweaters or blankets. A very unusual Swedish Gustavian period painted demilune commode/chest of drawers from the late 18th century in charming proportions that could easily take the place of a small buffet or console beyond clothing storage. Two spacious drawers occupy the deep case that is entirely washed in a soft gray typical of the Scandinavian taste for light palettes that aim to brighten rooms in dark winters, warmed by an intentional scraped effect revealing some of the grain underneath. Two bow-front drawers fitted with Louis XVI style hardware retain some of the original paper lining, the areas of loss (to the paper) creating another layer of tactile patina. The chest is raised on four tapered legs. A spectacular three-drawer commode from Sweden, circa 1790, that alludes to a Louis XVI influence met with the pared-down Nordic sensibility of both culture and time period. On top are the remains of a gray paint washing the surface which is shaped to chamfered front corners that overhang the fluted pilasters. The case of three drawers features weathered layers of rust-red paint in that delightfully tactile, scraped finish so iconic of the Gustavian style. The ruddy complexion is interrupted by small brass ring-pull hardware displaying Neoclassical urns along with oval escutcheons (however no key is present). The angled pilasters are enhanced with fluting, punctuated at the capital and base with small rosettes. A dovetail motif adornment, cut from brass, crowns the square, tapering legs. These unique elements beg for more prominent placement in the modern interior, with the scale that’s a fine alternative to a console table or small buffet. A Louis XVI style, marble-topped commode from France (late 19th century) in a bold, ebonized finish that could suit a wide range of decorating tastes today. The St. Anne marble is animated by ribbons of light and dark gray veining, shaped at the front in turreted corners. Repoussé brass panels in ribbed texture flank the top row of three small drawers where the center drawer retains a working lock & key and the other two use ring pulls to operate. Wonderfully detailed Louis XVI hardware of ring pulls and escutcheons are framed by polished brass trim on all the drawer fronts extending to the side panels. Early 20th century Dutch Empire-style mahogany tall chest of six drawers featuring Neoclassical elements with Art Deco geometry. A pierced brass gallery wraps the sides and partially the front, metallic details that are repeated on the drawer fronts as slivers of inlaid brass pinstripes and escutcheons. Cast bronze caryatid busts to the left and right are accented with parcel gilt to underscore the Egyptian references; they are mounted atop tapering pilasters–also inlaid with brass–that end in tiny replicas of human feet in cast bronze at the bottom drawer. A flamed effect from bookmatched mahogany calls attention to the luminous wood grain in striated caramel tones that animate the drawer fronts. Each drawer is fitted with a pair of drop brass bail pulls to open; the escutcheons are purely decorative in the absence of a key to operate the locks. The case is supported by turned legs on little brass knob feet. A handsome Louis XV style commode circa 1800 or earlier. The fantastic charcoal marble top has a molded edge, shaped in the same fashion as the body. Below, a stack of three drawers features impressive cast ormolu pulls and escutcheons. Two keys are included for all three functioning locks. The wonderfully patinated hardwood is accentuated with scrolling paneling. Along the bottom edge is a scalloped apron with a modeled edge features a floral carving in the center. This is a handsome English Regency style 18th century mahogany chest with a bow front that allows the beauty of the wood grain to be fully appreciated from every angle. It has a wonderful patina from years of loving care and use, fitting with any traditional or transitional interior design styles.
