French 19th Century Massive Ceramic Olive Oil Jars

A pair of enormous 19th century French stoneware cruches traditionally used as a bottle or demijohn to transport and store water, oil, or wine–now artifacts of culinary history to add to one’s studio pottery collection or décor. The hand of the potter has imparted organic variation to the form with a wabi-sabi quality of utilitarian authenticity, using a salty glaze which creates movement across the (uneven) surfaces of the bottles in dramatic shifts of color from deep, earthy browns and reds to the neutral tan of the stoneware clay. The bulbous vessels use integrated handles at the top to aid in pouring liquid out of the narrow mouth that would have been corked. One cork is present. Gilt accents illuminate the jars as pieces to display almost anywhere, beyond their function as storage vessels for various ointments, treatments, and balms. Stamped underneath the base with “Au Pot de Galien” and Limoges. Sold as a set of fifteen only. One lid, currently on the “Gomme de Barbarie” jar, has been repaired. Spanish 19th Century Sgraffito Terracotta Olive Jar

Decorated in artistic sgraffito lines and applied, twisting ribbon this large Spanish olive jar was hand-crafted in the 19th century and now, covered in a wonderful patina that sparks the imagination, it can be enjoyed in the home or garden. The rather bulbous form is ringed with flat bands in between ropes shaped to look like they are twisting around the circumference–a sign of the artisan’s vison to elevate the culinary intention of this humble olive jar to a higher status of studio pottery. Random spots of white and green lichen or moss add to its unique charm. The robust thickness of the fired terracotta makes this antique still inclined to be used indoors and out; there is not a drainage hole in the base which may limit the decorative functions. A rustic French 20th century stoneware flagon or cruche, traditionally used as a bottle for transporting and storing liquids, such as olive oil. The hand of the potter has imparted organic variation to the form with a wabi-sabi quality of utilitarian authenticity, using a salt glaze which creates movement across the ribbed surface of the bottle in dramatic shifts of color from deep, earthy browns and reds to the neutral tan of the stoneware clay. The bulbous vessel uses a single handle to aid in pouring liquid out of the narrow mouth at the top that would have been corked. This example has been decorated with an applied ruffle in two rings around the exterior giving it personality and flair even without a bouquet inside. French Pair of Petite 19th Century Empire Period Urns

A pair of French Empire period Old Paris Porcelain vases, circa 1810, with painted landscapes and figural scenes on each side. The Classical amphora profile features a gold-banded mouth at the top, transitioning to the narrow neck and tapering body framed by a pair of handles with low-relief caryatid faces in place of the openings, lifted by square bases all accented in gold gilt trim. The landscape imagery–coordinating but not identical–is of a lush and tranquil environment in an earth tone palette. On the reverse side of each vase are a pair of figures, again that are unique but similar, locked in what appears to be a tense exchange. Juxtaposing the refined glass blowing and cutting techniques of the vessel is a tongue-to-cheek cork stopper depicting a figural monk character–cast in silverplate–tipping back his chalice of wine or beer.
