There are at least as many types of antique hooks as there are things to hang on them. It can be challenging to narrow down your options with so many types.
For instance, there are coat racks and wall shelves with hooks and painted greenery for a floral theme. Meanwhile, gothic revival wall panels often come equipped with wrought iron hooks that twist the story deliciously.
A Bauhaus coat rack gives its antique hooks a modernist art deco feel, while brass hooks can evoke anything from ocean air and salt to the leather and scotch of the boardroom. Likewise, factory enamel, pulleys, and other industrial hooks can lean brutalist or optimistic, depending on the flavor of your décor.
Shopping for Antique Hooks & Racks
An antique hook isn’t usually the sort of thing one builds a room’s decoration around, although there’s nothing to say it couldn’t be. This means you’re looking for a hook that can fit into an existing look without drawing attention to it. You can find your perfect hook based either on the function or the materials from which it was created, and don’t be afraid to get dramatic!
There is naturally something dramatic about a hook, particularly whip or curved hooks, that asserts its utility as loudly as its beauty. Curtain hooks, in particular, are as functional as they are lovely. They should appeal visually, whether standing alone or holding back your curtains.
Choosing Your Antique Hooks & Racks
Is your antique hook functional, or did you add them purely for the sake of beauty? Do you want a single or a number of finished, useful hooks near the front or kitchen door? Or is it a wall panel of hooks, like a coat rack, that you’re looking for?
Perhaps you want a kitchen hook for holding grocery totes and aprons, with a natural artistic connection to the rest of your kitchen décor. The key to finding the perfect antique hooks & racks is to remember that you’re combining style with function, even if that function is simply to exist as a beautiful antique piece of art. A nature-themed wooden coatrack, for example, will create a different ambiance than hooks in the ornate French style or all-metal, geometric shapes.
