The English tea table originated in England around the later part of the 17th century. Tea drinking was formerly for the elite, but as the popularity of drinking tea expanded, the more common English classes began to adopt the practice of drinking tea as well. Afternoon teas became the norm and were an integral part of society and culture throughout England.
Tea time was an exquisite affair with dainty bites and delicious desserts served alongside piping tea kettles. Small tables became a staple in British homes and are still known today as tea tables. Tea tables feature a raised rim to hold the table’s contents securely.
