  • English 19th Century Marquetry and Inlay Jewelry Box

    Dimensions: 6” H x 13” W x 8 ⅞” D

    An extraordinary English jewelry box from the 19th century made of rosewood and meticulously inlaid with a number of other exotic materials for graphic contrast of motifs. On top of the lid, a stylized cartouche features a metal tag in the center, set in a diamond-shaped panel of bird’s eye maple and rosewood at the corners. Around the perimeter of the box is a thin line of geometric inlay using tiny pieces of ebonized wood, mother-of-pearl, bone, and silver which adds further intrigue. The interior is thoughtfully organized as a removable tray divided into sections and wrapped in cerulean blue velvet for various jewelry pieces. A small oval mirror in the lid is surrounded by ruched satin of the same color. Lifting out the tray accesses the open storage below.     A darling, Georgian-style jewelry box from 19th century England made of rosewood meticulously inlaid with scrolling foliate and floral motifs of contrasting satinwood and bone. This rectangular box has flat sides though animated by the undulations of the exotic wood and on the lid, stylized marquetry of wispy botanicals adds further intrigue and mystery around the contents. The interior is thoughtfully organized as a removable tray divided into sections wrapped in cerulean blue satin to protect various jewelry pieces and silver leaf gilding. A small oval mirror in the lid is surrounded by ruched satin of the same color. Below are two (locking) doors which swing out to reveal a shallow drawer of three sections, also padded in the same vibrant satin. One key included. The patinated exterior is mostly golden yellow with patches of the silver metal showing through, outlined in borders of mottled brown “grain painted” finish to appear as wood.   • English 19th Century Burl Marquetry and Inlay Writing Box

    Dimensions: 5 ⅝” H x 12” W x 9” D

    A luxurious English writing box of circa 1879, in the manner of Tunbridge Ware using burled walnut that has been inlaid with mother-of-pearl and geometric marquetry. The top of the lid is inlaid with a small hexagonal mother-of-pearl tile engraved with the initials “MAJ” and dated to “Jan. 26th, 1879”. Two parallel bands of geometric marquetry in contrasting, twisted effect wrap the lid and front, interrupting the expressively figured burl grain. The box unfolds to a sloped writing surface of green leather outlined in gold tooling which covers two storage compartments underneath. There is one secret compartment underneath the pen tray at the top, flanked by two smaller receptacles for other writing accessories and personal effects. The working lock is announced by a mother-of-pearl escutcheon in the same hexagonal shape as above, one key included. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos.   • English Chinoiserie Tole Box

    An English black tole box from the late 19th century decorated with Chinoiserie references like costumed figures, willow trees, and birds. This small rectangular case bears a charming antique patina, exposing some of the silver metal beneath the layers of paint, opening to a (most unexpected) pink interior divided into two sections.     A fantastic antique marriage or bridal box from circa 1780 Normandy, France decorated with hand-painted floral details that grace every surface, including a small bird on the top. Vibrant pink and cream painted tulips on a dark blue background have aged marvelously over the past two centuries, and expresses the trunk’s age in a manner that one can both see and feel. The minimal metal hardware has all been worked by hand. The domed top provides a distinguished style that sets this exceptional trunk apart from any ordinary box, and knowing that it was crafted to celebrate a special milestone makes it even more dear.     An English burl mahogany and inlay jewelry box from the 1800’s. The top of this square box has an inlaid cartouche of ebony, birdseye maple, and oak with brass banding.   • English 19th Century Mahogany Tea Caddy

    Dimensions: 8” H x 12 ⅛” W x 6 ½ ” D

    An extraordinary 19th century English solid mahogany tea caddy. This shaped box has a carved, angular top outlined with satinwood for subtle contrast, opening to a fitted interior. Inside are two removable boxes with sliding tops once used for storing loose leaf teas, shaped to echo the geometric dome of the outer case. The well in the center retains its original, cut crystal blending bowl that might easily double as flower vase. Note the gorgeous inlaid satinwood shield escutcheon on the front, however no key is present. The whole is raised on decorative bronze feet which are slightly different between the front and back; the back two have been repaired at some point in time.
