Swedish 19th Century Painted Linen Press
$3,200.0078.25"H x 53.13"W x 21"D
Dimensions: 78 ¼” H x 53 ⅛” W x 21” D
A Swedish pine buffet à deux corps (that is, a cabinet on chest in two sections) with origins in the 18th century designed with features and style that suit many decorating tastes and storage needs for the modern interior. The cabinet reflects that vibrant red tone of Gustavian antiques, having been made in the 1700s, which displays charming hand-painted faux bois wood grain in the shaped panels of the door fronts. Inside are two long shelves like a linen press, over six smaller drawers that open easily by iron ring pulls. The unpainted wood displays exciting movement and color in the grain. The base section of a three drawer commode appears younger than the upper cabinet, married in the early 19th century. Three drawers use turned knobs to glide easily making this a wonderful storage option for a number of rooms around the home. Gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to preserve all the historic character, ready for your interior. We believe this item to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. Dutch 18th Century Oak Kussenkast Armoire
$5,985.0072.50"H x 64.25"W x 24.75"D
Dimensions: 72 ½” H x 64 ¼” W x 24 ¾” D
An extraordinary Dutch wardrobe made in the late Renaissance period, 18th century. This substantial antique work of storage furniture is all hand-crafted of solid oak, some panels with “tigering” that creates a rippled appearance in the wood to fascinate in any room for storage of linens, clothing, or household essentials. Two thick, paneled doors work in tandem by functioning lock and key to enclose the divided interior: the right door is fitted with the lock while the left door is secured by a forged iron slide bolt in the top. The doors open to reveal two fixed shelves per side, ranging from 13 ½” – 19 ¼” deep over a pair of shallow drawers in the base opening by turned wood knobs. It appears that a small hanging rod was once added to the right-side cabinet which has since been removed leaving the brackets in place to retrofit to one’s own unique needs and taste. One of the most distinguishing features of this piece are the ebonized, bun feet whose roundness and proportions are a delightful contrast to the geometry above. Gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, this antique storage cabinet is ready for your interior. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. Before modern cupboards were a staple feature in homes, cabinets were the go-to storage option. They are versatile enough to store everything from clothes in your bedroom to dishes in the kitchen or display pieces in the lounge.
Antique cabinets are so appealing that they can add a dash of style and elegance to any space while serving a practical function. However, cabinets are some of the most challenging pieces of furniture to craft, and only the most skilled woodworkers could combine the precise joinery skills and artistry required to create cabinets that have withstood the test of time.
Woodworkers would use solid, high-quality wood to craft cabinets, and it’s common to find oak, walnut, and even mahogany cabinets on sale. High-end cabinets often contain expensive materials, such as ivory, gold, or lacquer, as adornments, adding to the feeling of luxury that these pieces exude.
Types of Antique Cabinets
If you’re looking to simplify your lifestyle, declutter, or create an extra layer of organization, an antique cabinet may be exactly what you need.
Cabinets vary dramatically, from simple 18th-century storage cabinets to complicated Baroque-style cabinets with secret compartments and unique features. Italian or French cabinets from the 18th and 19th centuries are perfect examples of exquisite woodworking skills, while Gustavian-style Swedish cabinets provide excellent functionality with an appealing minimalist design.
Some cabinets form part of a larger furniture set, making it easy to solve all your storage needs while maintaining a unified style across a room. For example, if you’re looking to organize your study, you could find a cabinet that also functions as a writing desk, perfect for a work-from-home area.
How to Choose Your Perfect Antique Cabinet
Finding the right antique cabinet can feel overwhelming. We recommend first deciding on your needs and then looking for a cabinet that meets those needs.
If your main goal is storage, apothecary antique cabinets or vintage wall-to-ceiling solutions will be ideal. Meanwhile, smaller options, such as drinks trolleys or miniature display cabinets, add a sense of elegance without dominating the space, perfect for smaller rooms with existing storage solutions.
