A 19th century French Napoleon III style armchair with a tall back at a slight recline in an angular profile that is at once restrained and welcoming. This example is upholstered in a regal shade of sky blue (in the Louis XVI and Gustavian tastes) wrapping the squared back and gently rolled arms. Matching bullion fringe with faint braids of gold skirting the floor is a glamorous touch to dress up any seating area, creating a cozy and inviting spot to read or relax in an air of French luxury & sophistication. French 19th Century Mahogany Pair of Empire Arm Chairs

This stunning pair of French Empire style mahogany barrel (or tub) armchairs are 19th century, reflecting the period’s extravagance and passion for noble materials in every aspect of the domestic interior. Made from richly figured mahogany wood framing the upholstery both inside and out, the armchairs feature deep curves at the handrail with subtle pinstripe inlay, sloping down to padded arms resting on bronze caryatid busts at the arm terminals. The front legs are given an extra touch of grandeur with lion paws at the floor and short saber legs at the rear. The original stuffing of natural fibers (likely horsehair) is intact however the current upholstery fabric has areas of discoloration and the manchette arms are worn through. Nevertheless, these French Empire lounge chairs exemplify luxury and timeless design sense that continues to inspire in today’s interiors. French 18th Century Louis XV Parlor Suite

French, 18th century Louis XV period seating ensemble to instantly transform a parlor or living room into a grand “salon” with seven pieces: one camelback sofa, three fauteuil armchairs, and three (armless) side chairs. Upholstery of cut velvet in pale green–like a white jade–has been brocaded with tonal damask patterns, harmonizing with the botanical theme in the caved frames, and outlined in brass nailhead trim. The giltwood frames have patinated over the centuries to reveal the deep red bole underneath, giving definition to the sinuous, rococo curves accented with floral and foliate carvings positioned at strategic points for maximum effect. The thoughtful proportions of the seat interior (balancing the heights and depths) are all quite comfortable, with dense stuffing of horse hair or other natural material that remains mostly firm and supportive underneath the tight upholstery. French 18th Century Period Louis XV Bergere

A fantastic and inviting French Louis XV period (circa 1750) carved oak bergere with more recent upholstery. The exposed wood frame, in all those sinuous curves typical of the Louis XV taste, is accented with floral and foliate carvings at the top, apron, and knees of the chair’s front legs. The seat interior, firm and deep to read or lounge, is currently dressed in a printed cotton upholstery of pheasants and flowers, carried through the outside arms but the backside is plain linen. Dainty cabriole legs lift the chair from the floor. We recommend having the frame tightened when adding new upholstery. Pair of German Leather Armchairs & Ottoman by Wilkhahn

This vibrant seating ensemble from German firm Wilkhahn was designed in the late 20th century by multi-hyphenate designers Wiege, Frenkler, Kolberg & Birkenheuer. The set includes a pair of red leather-upholstered lounge chairs and a matching ottoman to share between them. A molded plywood shell with walnut veneer (nodding to midcentury modern) encloses the cherry red interior of luxurious full-grain leather, elevated by cast aluminum legs. Wide seats are supremely comfortable, benefitting from thoughtfully engineered head and armrests gently folded over the shell for guests to lounge or converse at length in a living room, study, or office. This barrel-back lounge chair is made of a solid walnut frame carved to outline the graceful curvature enveloping the seat. It is upholstered inside and out in a burnt-orange striped velvet with a brass nailhead trim and a removable cushion that is in very worn condition and should be updated. English Lancaster Chair from JAMB

French Three-Seat Conversation Sofa

An interesting three-seat roundabout conversation sofa, known as an “Indiscret” (which similar to a tete-a-tete with one extra seat) introduced around the time of Napoleon II and continuing in popularity through the Victorian era. There are three curved, upholstered, and tufted arms on a painted baluster arcade curling around three boxed, upholstered seat cushions in a blue & pink floral pattern. The whole sits on a multitude of turned and painted legs on casters to easily rotate or move the piece as needed for parties. This pair of French Louis XVI-style bergeres are in wonderful condition for their 19th century age. The sheltering, wing-back style frames hand carved with a twisted ribbon border, acanthus leaf arms, and retain their original painted finish. Upholstered in an elegant striped floral fabric of classic Marie Antoinette influence, with a removable seat cushion and little manchette pads on the arms. These sturdy chairs achieve a sense of lightness from fluted, tapering legs. Seat height is 20”. Sold as a pair only. A brilliant pair of gold gilt fauteuils, made in France towards the beginning of the 19th century. The pair has been more recently upholstered in a silk fabric depicting fruiting branches. These Louis XV armchairs have a carved frame that is finished in wonderfully preserved, lustrous gold gilt. Sinuous lines, hallmarks of the classic Louis XV design, are incorporated into the chair’s rails, with lovely cabriole legs emerging from them and terminating in escargot feet.
