English Victorian “Literary Machine” Book Stand

English Victorian book stand, circa 1900 invented by John Carter and patented as a “Literary Machine” that offers two adjustable components mounted on a brass rod: the small mahogany easel to prop up a book and the circular shelf below to place one’s drink, eyeglasses, candle, or other small items that would support the enjoyment of reading. The shelf is not only adjustable in height but also slides along a cantilevered rod and can be angled to a comfortable degree for viewing. Note the small lyre-shaped clip protruding from the top as another, thoughtful convenience. The tall brass rod is mounted on a cast iron base of four arched feet with ornate scrolled motifs. On the back of the book display is the original tag from the maker “Carters” with the address in London. This unique device has been gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to maintain the historic character. We believe this item to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. An ingenious side table from England, early to mid 20th century, this “Canterbury” style table is an attractive storage solution for any number of rooms and functions. In the apron are two small drawers with beautiful drop-handle hardware separated by lock & key in between. The tall open shelf below is split by five parallel dividers to the right side, once used to hold ledger books and now can organize a small collection of record albums, newspapers, magazines, or other media. Robust, turned legs swell and taper in a ringed profile for an exciting silhouette, ending on tapered feet that keeps the design light and accessible. This table has been gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to preserve the historic character although there remains heavily scratched areas on the top surface. French vintage midcentury (circa 1950s) set of four, oak triangular stools with rush seats in the manner of Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Faucheux. Expertly wrapped rush seats around the convex edges are still tight and in good condition with a few missing cords which does not affect the functionality. The oak dowel ladder-like construction of the legs remains strong, variably patinated over time. On top, the Languedoc red marble is a rich oxblood color with patches of gray and streaks of white throughout, finished to a sloping edge that is comfortable and inviting if used as a small desk. The base is made of solid birch with beautiful curling present that shows movement in natural lighting. The apron is shaped by little swells in a simple design to echo the table’s cabriole legs. In the apron are two shallow drawers: perfect for storing pens, paper, and other writing implements. The cabriole legs are slender and graceful, their shapely figure terminating in carved hoof feet.
