Dimensions: 29 ¼” H x 57 ⅜” W x 23 ⅝” D
A unique painted bow-front commode/chest of drawers from the late 18th century in striking finishes and proportions that beg for a prominent spot in the home like a small buffet or console beyond clothing storage. Its red marble top, likely a type of Campan Mélange, shows exciting movement of gray and white veins throughout the red-maroon stone that has been cut and polished to a sloping bullnose edge. Two wide, spacious drawers occupy the deep case that bears the remains of a tonal blue painted scheme which has worn significantly to reveal the blond pine grain underneath. Both drawers open easily by pairs of solid, cast brass drop handles with satisfying heft. The chest is raised on four tapered legs in a slight cabriole scroll, armored at the feet with acanthus applications in gilt bronze. By its lines and engaging features, this period demilune chest of drawers will make for a lovely addition to any room, having been gently cleaned and waxed to maintain the nicely weathered finish and natural character. Swedish Gustavian Period 18th Century Painted Commode
$11,500.0030.63"H x 40"W x 21.13"D
Dimensions: 30 ⅝” H x 40” W x 21 ⅛” D
A spectacular three-drawer commode from Sweden, circa 1790, that alludes to a Louis XVI influence met with the pared-down Nordic sensibility of both culture and time period. On top are the remains of a gray paint washing the surface which is shaped to chamfered front corners that overhang the fluted pilasters. The case of three drawers features weathered layers of rust-red paint in that delightfully tactile, scraped finish so iconic of the Gustavian style. The ruddy complexion is interrupted by small brass ring-pull hardware displaying Neoclassical urns along with oval escutcheons (however no key is present). The angled pilasters are enhanced with fluting, punctuated at the capital and base with small rosettes. A dovetail motif adornment, cut from brass, crowns the square, tapering legs. These unique elements beg for more prominent placement in the modern interior, with the scale that’s a fine alternative to a console table or small buffet. Dimensions: 32 ½” H x 51 ⅜” W x 24 ¼” D
An extraordinary French mahogany commode from the 18th century, Louis XVI Period, decorated with an impressive marquetry technique that creates movement and definition over the drawer fronts and side panels. The commode retains its original slab of gray marble, the surface animated by frenetic white veining, and shaped to turreted front corners. Across the top row are three drawers of geometric marquetry designs to outline them–like two rows of twisting ribbon–in alternating blonde and dark woods. Brass bail pulls operate the left and right drawers while the middle drawer requires the key to function as a pull (lock is intact but does not turn). The two wide drawers across the center and below, follow the rhythm as above with three distinct rectangular “frames” around the drawer hardware, in graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that have been hand-decorated in wispy patterns of red pigment suggesting plumes or waves–adding depth and regal grandeur to this already fine example of the woodworker’s craft. The side panels have complementary inlaid designs, themes which are replicated down the turrets (using marquetry to imply fluted recesses) moving into the conical feet so from every perspective one can admire the visionary intentions of the maker even two centuries later. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, this commode is ready to be enjoyed in your interior. Dimensions: 61 ½” H x 38 ⅝” W x 21” D
Early 20th century Dutch Empire-style mahogany tall chest of six drawers featuring Neoclassical elements with Art Deco geometry. A pierced brass gallery wraps the sides and partially the front, metallic details that are repeated on the drawer fronts as slivers of inlaid brass pinstripes and escutcheons. Cast bronze caryatid busts to the left and right are accented with parcel gilt to underscore the Egyptian references; they are mounted atop tapering pilasters–also inlaid with brass–that end in tiny replicas of human feet in cast bronze at the bottom drawer. A flamed effect from bookmatched mahogany calls attention to the luminous wood grain in striated caramel tones that animate the drawer fronts. Each drawer is fitted with a pair of drop brass bail pulls to open; the escutcheons are purely decorative in the absence of a key to operate the locks. The case is supported by turned legs on little brass knob feet. Cleaned and professionally refinished to restore the wood back to its natural lustre, please view the detailed images to see the current condition.

Antique Commodes & Chests From Fireside Antiques
Some of the best antiques are those that perform double-duty in your home, acting as both a decorative conversation piece and a functional piece of furniture. With our antique commodes and chests, you’ll have just that: a sturdy, handcrafted piece built to last and an eye-catching conversation starter for any guest who sees it.
Our antique chests range in age from as early as the 17th century all the way to 20th-century pieces and reproductions, each with its own unique history to share. The chest of drawers was common across Europe and the US for hundreds of years, so antique models come in numerous shapes and finishes. With enough patience, you’ll be able to find one to match any modern style.
Because they come in so many different designs, a good chest of drawers can fit into any room, both from a stylistic perspective and a logistical perspective. The right-sized chest can fit in a corner, under a table, or even in a hallway, making the most of any unused space.
Fortunately, rustic and antique furniture options are currently very trendy, so there’s no need to hide your chest of drawers away in a bedroom or basement. Feel free to put it on display in your family room, dining room, or kitchen if you so desire.
One of the most significant aspects of antique dressers, in fact, is their flexibility and reusability in any design. As a storage device, antique commodes can hold anything from fine china and dishes to various loose items, not just the usual clothing we tend to use them for nowadays.
History of the Chest
Believe it or not, while it doesn’t feel like we can live without them today, antique commodes and chests weren’t very common until the late 19th century. This was because long-distance, intercontinental travel became common (and accessible to the everyday person) around the same time.
When people traveled, they would use a permanent chest of drawers to store away any belongings they didn’t want to take with them. A smaller, portable trunk (or what we better know today as a suitcase) became popular to transport a few outfits on long journeys.
Over time, these chests and trunks became more ornate, both as a sign of wealth for the owner and to double as a decorative piece in the home. Today, while even the simplest antique chests have their own unique charms, the most intricate ones make particularly exceptional statement pieces.
