Italian Vintage Breuer Cesca Style Side Chairs with Cane Seats

A fantastic pair of vintage Italian “Cesca” style armless chairs in the manner of Marcel Breuer. First presented in 1928, the design has become iconic of Bauhaus minimalism intersecting with a reverence for traditional craftsmanship. The gently curved seats and seat backs are made of tightly woven cane stretched between a frame of complementary beech wood left in its natural blonde tone, cantilevered on tubular chromed steel legs that form a continuous line to achieve an effect that is light in visual weight and mass. Such thoughtful details make these chairs at home around a dining table, desk, or other seating area. “Made in Italy” stamped into the underside of the seats. Sold as a pair. Italian Vintage Set of Four Ebonized Upholstered Armchairs

A very unusual set of four dining armchairs from Italy–1980s, the height of Postmodern and Memphis design– with stylistic references that go back to the late 19th century. The influence of Charles Rennie Mackintosh is undeniable as the chairs are stylized, even architectural in their simplification of distinct geometric lines made even more pronounced by the sturdiness of the ebonized frames. At the top of the chairs is a crescent-shaped headrest narrowing to sharp points, rising from the splat of three parallel bars set at a comfortable recline behind the upholstered seats (currently in a sage-green chenille). Vertical legs at the front and sabered legs at the back are sturdy, rising up to half-moon armrests. The openness of the design and the bold creativity invites a conversation whether placed around a dining table or a living room arrangement. Gently cleaned and polished, ready for your interior. Swedish Biedermeier Style Pair of Carved Birch Armchairs

A unique pair of Swedish late 19th century/early 20th century carved birch armchairs, the style would best be described as Biedermeier hence the beautiful blonde wood frames with Neoclassical profile and saber legs that would fit with nearly all traditional to contemporary decorating styles. The upper handrails are carved with a highly technical twisted effect flanked by turned rings as the only decorative flourish on the otherwise restrained yet elegant design. Currently the seats are upholstered in a very worn, satin material of alternating stripes in sage-green and ivory which complements the luminous frame. Swedish Biedermeier 19th Century Birch Armchairs

A pair of Swedish Biedermeier armchairs from circa 1820 in birch that expresses the most extraordinary patterns (which occur naturally in the wood) but have been revealed by the skilled hand of the artisan. The rather square and restrained profile of the chairs is contrasted by the lyre represented on the splat, which incorporates thin metal rods as the “strings” for the instrument. Seats are currently upholstered in a heavyweight twill material of complementary faded brick tone that is in worn condition but acceptable to continue using. They are a natural seat height for dining, and generous in scale to incorporate as occasional chairs for a living room setting. Wood frames have been gently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to maintain the natural luster. Swedish 19th Century Carved Oak Dining Chairs – Set of Six

A fabulous set of carved oak Biedermeier-style chairs from Sweden, early 19th century, with soft cut-velvet seats to enhance the sense of refinement the period is known for. The curvaceous pierced back splat exhibits an openwork (stylized) palmette design below a thick upper rail carved with a diamond shape that is emphasized by natural darkening of the wood. The sage-green upholstery retains a luxurious and inviting touch (although a bit worn in places) both to the hand as well as when seated for dining and used around a game table. Internal structure remains firm and supportive. Note how the regal fleur-de-lis motif in the fabric has a rose-gold shimmer under certain lighting that looks celebratory for any occasion. German Pair of 19th Century Biedermeier Chairs

A restrained pair of German Biedermeier side chairs of circa 1820 in that timeless combination of blonde wood and ebonized accents. The upper handrails have an architectural profile with a gentle curve and a line of ebonized pinstripe. A central splat, shaped to resemble a lyre, is topped with a panel of birds eye maple over three ebonized lines to suggest the strings of the musical instrument. Currently the seat upholstery is a plain black twill fabric that is worn but acceptable to continue using as the internal structure remains firm and comfortable. Joining the squared, tapered legs is a rather unusual crossed stretcher of thin strips that have been gracefully shaped. Pair of Danish Biedermeier Armchairs

Danish, early 20th century pair of Biedermeier armchairs made during the reign of Christian X (1912-1947). The chair frames are crafted from satin birch with natural luminosity like gold to shimmer in the light, revealing fine grain patterns. A carved backrest incorporates the familiar “shovel” design of early Viennese Biedermeier chairs in a gently arching shape ending in exaggerated lobes, finished on the underside by a half-circle fan including angular ridges of a stylized scallop shell. Resembling a fauteuil, the graceful arms of the chair project forward in a gentle slope before curling inward. The front legs rise above the seat and are crowned with ebonized spheres where they intersect with the arms. Current upholstery of a cream and sage green striped sateen material is in fair condition showing a few stains but would be acceptable to continue using. French 19th Century Set of Ten Os de Mouton Dining Chairs

A suite of ten dining chairs from 19th century France composed of (8) side chairs and (2) armchairs all upholstered in a needlepoint material referencing Verdure tapestry. Thick, oak frames are carved and shaped in the iconic “Os de Mouton” profile (like mutton bones) which is a biomorphic silhouette that pairs nicely with the lush foliate imagery in the textile. The fabric is rendered in muted tones of sage, gray, and khaki for subtle contrast between the overlapping canopy of tree limbs while a large nailhead trim around the seats offers textural contrast. Generous in scale and very comfortable for dining, the timeless style would not be out of place in more professional settings as well. Note the wood frames have been cleaned and gently refinished to preserve their historic character. The upholstery is in good condition, with some wear visible on certain chairs. New upholstery in a tightly woven material featuring reeded bands of dark blue and gold, complemented by a blue gimp braided trim for definition between the seat and legs. The original upholstery is a chocolate brown suede, now very worn but remains intact, forming a molded seat of continuous seat and seat back. Bauhaus-style chrome frames are minimal in profile, wrapping around the back and sides of the comfortable seats to be open and inviting for all styles of entertaining. A funky set of six (6) French dining chairs from circa 1970, easily fitting a Midcentury Modern/Scandinavian taste for gentle curvature that is most importantly both comfortable and inviting. Likely designed by the firm of Baumann, the armless chair frames of beech wood are thick and flat in profile, suspending the backrest at the top and a wide, slightly concave seat in between. What appears to be the original upholstery is a checked velvet of alternating beige and rosy pink that is in worn, but acceptable condition for the age and use. Removable chair seats remain firm and comfortable, wrapped in a tightly woven material of black horsehair and raised, geometric design in pale green straw. Inspired by the formality of Chinese Ming style, these distinctive chairs appear to be the work of Italian firm, Fratelli Montina, who also produced designs by the architect Gio Ponti. Slick, black lacquer coats the wood frames, emphasizing the linear and vertical qualities of the design, sharply contrasted by the woven cane seats in their natural straw color. Possibly the design can be attributed to Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia as the “Solo” collection, there are no original labels to be found that would verify this provenance beyond the quality of the materials. The curved backrests feature horizontal reeded texture on the outside and are perfectly balanced on top of the turned spindles. Lambs tongue carving on the apron is interrupted by folate carved joinery dies above tapered, reeded legs. White muslin is fixed to the frames as a temporary cover with visible upholsterers nails, ready for the fabric of your choice or left as is depending on your style.
