A French 19th century Louis Philippe mirror with an understated, gold gilt frame enhanced by dark oxidation and craquelure texture. Etched into the frame is a fluted pattern interrupted by a few cracks and areas of wear which give authentic patina to the design. This gorgeous mirror will be right at home in many decorating tastes and rooms. The mirror plate appears to be original and is lightly foxed producing a thin veil of fog across the glass. A lovely pair of gilt mirrors from 19th century France, their strong proportions are emphasized by red bole clay peeking through the shimmering gold of the arched top frames. The rather restrained molding is smooth and rounded, given variation and texture by patina to the gilding which confirms their historic age. Dark spots of foxing are present in the glass of only one mirror, however the condition of the more recent plate would indicate that it’s not a new replacement. A French, 19th century Louis Philippe mirror with lightly carved trellised design and beaded texture surrounding the gold gilt frame that has become more defined where the gilding has subsided to the red bole underneath. Look closely at the bottom corners and a subtle foliate pattern emerges, softening the geometry of the crosshatched design. Mirror glass is likely a modern replacement without the expected foxing or crystallization but still right at home in a range of transitional to traditional decorating tastes. An extraordinary cushion mirror from 19th century France, the reflective qualities are secondary to the artistry seen in the gilded, repoussé metal decoration cascading from the pediment on top to surround the glass on every plane. In the crown are high-relief representations of botanical themes and a few military references like flags, arrows, and drums à la Louis XVI. The rectangular mirror at center projects outward from the frame, dazzling with crystals along the bottom edge which calls attention to the hand-cut bevel around the perimeter. Moving outward from the center, a border of the cushioned metal is edged in a ebonized wood molding of reeded texture that is repeated toward the outer border of mirrored panels ornamented with elaborate corners and stations in between. The mirror plates are original, exhibiting varying degrees of foxing and a thin haze of oxidation. A dramatic and theatrical late 19th Century carved and gilt frame, made in Glasgow, Scotland by picture framers Menzies & Son according to the original label affixed to the back. Note the original painting has been replaced by new mirror glass. This amazing frame, at first glance, appears to be inspired by French rococo, with thick, scrolling foliate and shell motifs wrapping the edges against a reticulated background that plays on a sense of depth and texture. The artistry in this piece is reflective of a flourishing creative environment during the period known as the Glasgow School, a regional style parallel to Art Nouveau. Displayed in vertical orientation, the frame is symmetrical to hang in either direction. Mirror plate is a more recent addition. A wonderful 18th century French gold giltwood mirror, likely made as a wedding gift, the square frame is dense with texture and pattern of grape vines to brighten up any room. Unusual for this genre of mirrors, the expected pedimented at the top has been curiously omitted, telling its symbolic narrative of abundance through delicate tendrils and grape clusters that wrap around the French gray painted background. The foliate elements are bookended at the lower corners with rosettes which transition into the tall feet elevating and protecting the frame. Beaded molding on the interior surrounds the original mirror plate that shows a line of foxing toward the middle among other spots of textural oxidation. A spectacular French 19th century gold gilt mantel mirror with original mirror glass revealing curious patches of foxing across the top. The regal molding incorporates textural, floral, and foliate motifs with cartouches under layers of patina exposing some of the red bole underneath. Five equidistant spots of foxing delineate the upper third of the glass and glittering crystals have begun to accumulate along the bottom edge of the frame, confirming the historic age of this striking mantel mirror.
