French vintage 20th century charcoal and chalk sketch/study of a statuesque woman in loose-fitting dress (like a dressing gown); out of context she could easily be mistaken for a figure from Greco-Roman antiquity. Beautiful in its simplicity and monochromatic palette, the work highlights the gathering of fabric in her voluminous gown, the waves of her hair, and the dancer’s grace suggest her outstretched arms. An understated giltwood frame draws the viewer in for a closer look, however there is some loss to the molding at the upper left corner. English 1920s framed charcoal figure study of a life drawing class in progress. With remarkable talent the artist has constructed a tense scene dominated by the nude male model at the front of the class (far right of the image) surrounded by students at their easels. The Art Deco time period is evident in the geometric repetition of the students, the pendant lights above, and statuesque pose of the model balanced by a tall staff to maintain his posture. By drawing some of the figures as looking out toward the viewer, and the model turned to face them, the perceived wall containing the action dissolves to raise the question of who is studying whom. An ink and pencil landscape drawing from England signed by M.T. Brown. Recently matted and framed, this drawing has the viewer standing close to see all the well rendered details, fine lines and shading. The imagery is an interesting scene depicting cliffside mountain steps going up to a winding road shaded by cloud shaped trees leading to a mid-century hotel with a racy little car in front. This delightful drawing pairs a tight architectural scene with soft shading and lush trees to create a feast for the eyes. Graphite has gently smudged the edges of the white matte.
