The sheltering seat interior is tightly upholstered across the back and arms with two square, loose seat cushions for easy maintenance. The down-wrapped cushions remain plush and very comfortable to relax or converse. Fluted, tapering legs (classic Louis XVI) elevate the seat from the floor to have a regal presence in any room while keeping a relaxed atmosphere. • French 18th Century Louis XV Parlor Suite

    $9,800.00

    37"H x 65.88"W x 25.50"D

    Dimensions: 37” H x 65 ⅞” W x 25 ½” D

French, 18th century Louis XV period seating ensemble to instantly transform a parlor or living room into a grand “salon” with seven pieces: one camelback sofa, three fauteuil armchairs, and three (armless) side chairs. Upholstery of cut velvet in pale green–like a white jade–has been brocaded with tonal damask patterns, harmonizing with the botanical theme in the caved frames, and outlined in brass nailhead trim. The giltwood frames have patinated over the centuries to reveal the deep red bole underneath, giving definition to the sinuous, rococo curves accented with floral and foliate carvings positioned at strategic points for maximum effect. The thoughtful proportions of the seat interior (balancing the heights and depths) are all quite comfortable, with dense stuffing of horse hair or other natural material that remains mostly firm and supportive underneath the tight upholstery. In the 18th century, women wearing elaborate ornamental dresses used these small two-seater sofas or divans. However, because these antique loveseats could comfortably sit two people, they became popular among couples. Couples could engage in intimate conversation while sitting modestly.

This prioritization of modesty contributed to the loveseat’s initial minimalistic design. Originally, the loveseat was just a wooden bench, often made of wicker or gilded wood.

However, the 1800s saw luxurious upgrades, including extra padding for greater comfort. Partygoers loved cozy loveseats that would feature thrills like carved mahogany crests and cabriole legs.

These Victorian-styled antique loveseats are still in demand today. You can choose from many styles, including Chippendale, Georgian, and Baroque. Small touches like curved-back styles on Louis XV settees versus straight-back styles on Victorian loveseats add a layer of freedom.

While popularized during the Victorian area in England, the loveseat design spread to other regions. Choose antique designs from well-known Italian designers or Postmodern styles from more recent designers like Pierre Paulin or Vladimir Kagan.

Decorating with Your Antique Loveseats

Loveseats are perfect for modern homes, even when choosing traditional Victorian loveseats. Loveseats can complement sofas and are an excellent furnishing touch to a smaller space. Give guests extra room to sit, especially if you’re having couples over.

You can easily arrange your couch, sofa, and loveseat in the living room to create a central focal point. Position your loveseat next to a unique feature like your antique fireplace. Of course, leave plenty of walking room for your guests to access coffee tables and more.

Besides your living room, you can position our loveseats in many other spaces. For example, a loveseat is ideal for a corner reading nook inside your study, or you can put one at the foot of a guestroom bed.

Curated Collection of Antique Loveseats

Loveseats also come in many color schemes, including pink and white upholstery, gilded wood, mohair, and leather.

Choose between pieces that blend in with your living room or glamorous antique loveseats that’ll be the life of the party. Whatever your decor, you can find traditional Victorian-style loveseats and Danish modern options to suit your style.
