A stunning, large oil-on-canvas painting by Belgian artist, Gerard Roosen (1869 – 1935). “Girl on a Beach” features a beautiful young woman who is draped, topless, on a rock with most of her backside exposed as her gold satin and dark green garments collect around her thighs. The viewer sees just the left profile of her face while she props herself up to gaze into the sea under a dappled pastel sky. Although painted much later, this work continues with several themes popular in the Pre-Raphaelite style: a strong female character, perhaps a bit rebellious, even mysterious, when placed in this natural setting.
