An extraordinary 19th century English solid mahogany tea caddy. This shaped box has a carved, angular top outlined with satinwood for subtle contrast, opening to a fitted interior. Inside are two removable boxes with sliding tops once used for storing loose leaf teas, shaped to echo the geometric dome of the outer case. The well in the center retains its original, cut crystal blending bowl that might easily double as flower vase. Note the gorgeous inlaid satinwood shield escutcheon on the front, however no key is present. The whole is raised on decorative bronze feet which are slightly different between the front and back; the back two have been repaired at some point in time. English 19th Century Burl Marquetry and Inlay Writing Box

A luxurious English writing box of circa 1879, in the manner of Tunbridge Ware using burled walnut that has been inlaid with mother-of-pearl and geometric marquetry. The top of the lid is inlaid with a small hexagonal mother-of-pearl tile engraved with the initials “MAJ” and dated to “Jan. 26th, 1879”. Two parallel bands of geometric marquetry in contrasting, twisted effect wrap the lid and front, interrupting the expressively figured burl grain. The box unfolds to a sloped writing surface of green leather outlined in gold tooling which covers two storage compartments underneath. There is one secret compartment underneath the pen tray at the top, flanked by two smaller receptacles for other writing accessories and personal effects. The working lock is announced by a mother-of-pearl escutcheon in the same hexagonal shape as above, one key included. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos. This angular shaped box has a sloped lid matched on each side to continue the delicate grain patterns, with a flat upper panel outlined in fluted carvings. The inside of the domed lid is wrapped in an embossed paper like red damask alluding to the silk which would have been found along the tea and spice routes. Inside are two lidded boxes once used for storing loose leaf teas which have retained much of the original tin lining. In the center is a pressed glass blending bowl faceted like cut crystal–truly elevating the tea drinking experience. The escutcheon is intact on the front, however no key is present. French circa 1950 “pique cierge” that is, a large and freestanding candlestick to place at the church altar or anywhere around the room. The black metal structure is mounted with a pricket (the spike within from the brass bobeche) to hold a pillar candle which rises on a simple rod interrupted by a brass ring stationed in the middle. Below, an angular tripod branches into three feet blanched on brass spheres for a Modern touch that would harmonize with a range of interior styles dating from French Empire to more Contemporary. A magnificent pair of 18th century Portuguese carved pine wall consoles, also called brackets, originally part of the architectural program of a cathedral altar. They have been updated more recently with travertine stone tops for a durable surface that complements the timeless quality of the baroque profile. Deep cornices project with chamfered corners (of which the stone tops are shaped to fit) with a beautiful slope that contours then retreats toward the wall. A finely carved finial inverted from the base reveals foliate carvings to echo the acanthus at the top corners, unifying the look and enhancing its architectural function. Truly these are a remarkable feat of vision and craft. At just over 20” in depth, these floating brackets are a practical solution in lieu of console tables with legs, satisfying both a decorative statement and shelf to display upon. The niche interior is painted a leafy shade of green, framed by an arched doorway flanked on the sides by scrolling corbels which continue down the sides as floral-foliate carvings in high-relief. Dark, angular molding that wraps the chamfered corners of the crown and the stepped base appears reddish brown now, with traces of the original gilding. The left and right sides of the case are decorated in a faux marble finish of implied veining which underscores that this altar is a unique work of art by its own merits. French 18th Century Forged Iron Andirons

A towering pair of 18th century French forged, wrought iron andiron-chenets to watch over the hearth. They include a small basket at the top for warming, the rim impressed with a geometric pattern that is repeated on the column and contrasted by the twisted detail of the rods. Scrolled elements curl outward from the pillars attaching multiple spit hooks to adjust for cooking temperatures. Decorative scrollwork in between the arched legs are reminiscent of fleur-de-lis to underscore the French-made origins of these sculptural fireplace tools. Designed as a complementary pair, each andiron is the mirror image of the other with an offset hind leg (the bracket to elevate the burning logs) supported by a spike. A stunning pair of Italian 19th century giltwood wall appliqués–decorative elements to enhance the architectural program–likely obtained from a church or cathedral as they are flat and unfinished on the backs, intended to be viewed from front. The Eternal Flame urn forms are handcarved with stunning Neoclassical motifs and textures that not only conveys the power of the church but also the lasting influence of the Empire shaped by Napoleon’s vision. At the top of each urn is a textured, waving flame that would have been illuminated by candlelight to magnify its aura. Pairs of eagle heads–iconic symbols of the period–are mounted on each side of the urn’s shoulder with an amber glass rosette embedded in between them. Festooned swags emphasize the curvature and fullness of the urn which is revisited again where the form tapers toward the base as fluted carvings mixed with additional floral-foliate references unifying the exuberance of the design. Block feet painted the color of red bole elevate the urns to stabilize them on a table or mantel. Note that evidence of wax is still visible on the backsides, confirming their historic age. These substantial “pricket” candlesticks will make a statement on any mantel or table: tall, slender forms on tripod bases are mounted with their original wrought iron spikes and their baluster silhouettes are decorated with Classical (and subtle Louis XVI) patterns. Stylized leaves, fluting, and festooned motifs are highlighted by the rich gold leaf finish now aged to a soft patina. Note that as the pair would have been against the altar and not seen in the round, they are not entirely gilded to save resources so one vertical strip on the backside appears more of a burnt sienna than gold.
