A large kitchen / culinary scale made in Lyon, France circa 1880. This wonderful antique instrument was used to measure various ingredients and products that are epicurean in nature. Its sizable brass plates each contain a multitude of stamps that would have been left by a professional whose job it was to calibrate these weighing machines. These markings, along with its larger size and 40 kilogram capacity signal that this scale would have been used in a commercial setting. Its dials are stylized arrows that will point to one another when the weight of the plate containing the product equals the graduated brass weights that would be added to the other plate. The painted wood base is surmounted by a beautiful piece of white marble. Manufactured in Lyon by Bruyat.

Both front and back have a glass-front dial with a silver ring and decorative arrow pointers. This enables both the grocer and customer to see the scale’s measurement. The two plateaux are made of copper, which have taken a lovely, antique patina. The scale was manufactured by Trussant et Cie (Trussant & Co.) in Sainte-Livre, east of Bordeaux.
