An antique British counter or grocer scale in cast iron and brass circa 1890. Small scales of this type had many uses during the Victorian Era and could be found in apothecaries, tobacconists, grocers, and shops. This scale has a painted black cast iron base that now shows a wonderful patina. When looking at its underside you can see the other colors it has been in its lifetime of use as remnants of creamy orange and a kelly green paint show through. Featuring the original wonderfully aged brass bowls and three weights of 2 lb, 1 lb, and 4oz that have the royal cypher of Queen Victoria on their marks. This scale is in great antique condition and would be an interesting addition to a kitchen, shop, or workplace. French 19th Century Culinary Scale from Lyon

A large kitchen / culinary scale made in Lyon, France circa 1880. This wonderful antique instrument was used to measure various ingredients and products that are epicurean in nature. Its sizable brass plates each contain a multitude of stamps that would have been left by a professional whose job it was to calibrate these weighing machines. These markings, along with its larger size and 40 kilogram capacity signal that this scale would have been used in a commercial setting. Its dials are stylized arrows that will point to one another when the weight of the plate containing the product equals the graduated brass weights that would be added to the other plate. The painted wood base is surmounted by a beautiful piece of white marble. Manufactured in Lyon by Bruyat.

An antique French counter or grocer scale in ebonized hardwood and mahogany inlay with white marble top, circa 1880. The scale is made of hardwood, with each side having a thin inlaid rectangle of more lightly toned mahogany. Both front and back have a glass-front dial with a silver ring and decorative arrow pointers. This enables both the grocer and customer to see the scale’s measurement. The two plateaux are made of copper, which have taken a lovely, antique patina. The scale was manufactured by Trussant et Cie (Trussant & Co.) in Sainte-Livre, east of Bordeaux.

A stunning, large brass table scale, made near the turn of the century, England. The scale is no longer operational, but still makes an mighty impact on a space. The scale is made of brass, with two copper weigh pans. The shaped arms support the hanging pans, attached by linked brass strands. As seen in the detailed photos, each copper pan has been stamped numerous times with a seal, bearing a year, surrounded by Greek letters. The English crown can also be seen stamped into the copper. These dates signify when the scale was last calibrated. The brass column shaft sits atop a brass pedestal, which sits atop stacked brass, which sits upon a piece of gray marble. The entire scale is lifted by brass ball feet. The scale includes the weights with which it is pictured.
