  • French 19th Century Solid Oak Book Stand

    A wonderful music or book stand, made in France towards the end of the 19th century. The uncomplicated design is a testament to turned wood, with its post made of solid oak, which has been turned in a classic balustraded form. The oak has been quarter sawn, giving it a striated appearance which is sometimes referred to as ‘tiger oak’. The stand is lifted by a tripodal base, made of three shaped legs.

    This massive culinary or produce scale from Lyon, France is the perfect antique accessory to elevate any kitchen. The base is made of solid waxed pine with a fantastic vibrant patina. Its sizable, heavy copper trays have aged wonderfully and bear the original manufacturer stamp of Lpirou et P. Schaller- S.R. Tunisie- Lyon.   • Framed Collection of 19th Century Wax Seals

    An interesting collection of fourteen 19th Century wax seals that retain much history. The collection is mounted on antique linen and framed in a single antique gilt frame.  Intaglios – ‘carving’ in Italian – were used to make wax seals or ‘signatures’ for correspondence letters.  Ideally, black seals were for mourning, while red seals represented love. Many of the seals have remnants of the envelope and some envelopes also have dates and signatures.     A unique hand-blown glass fly catcher from France! Very few signs of wear are visible. The basin at the bottom of the clear glass dome is meant to be filled with a small amount of sugar water for the flies to trap themselves in.   • French 19th Century Culinary Scale from Lyon

    A large kitchen / culinary scale made in Lyon, France circa 1880. This wonderful antique instrument was used to measure various ingredients and products that are epicurean in nature. Its sizable brass plates each contain a multitude of stamps that would have been left by a professional whose job it was to calibrate these weighing machines. These markings, along with its larger size and 40 kilogram capacity signal that this scale would have been used in a commercial setting. Its dials are stylized arrows that will point to one another when the weight of the plate containing the product equals the graduated brass weights that would be added to the other plate. The painted wood base is surmounted by a beautiful piece of white marble. Manufactured in Lyon by Bruyat.

    An antique French counter or grocer scale in ebonized hardwood and mahogany inlay with white marble top, circa 1880. The scale is made of hardwood, with each side having a thin inlaid rectangle of more lightly toned mahogany. Both front and back have a glass-front dial with a silver ring and decorative arrow pointers. This enables both the grocer and customer to see the scale’s measurement. The two plateaux are made of copper, which have taken a lovely, antique patina. The scale was manufactured by Trussant et Cie (Trussant & Co.) in Sainte-Livre, east of Bordeaux.

  • English Late 19th Century Large Brass Table Scale & Weights

    A stunning, large brass table scale, made near the turn of the century, England. The scale is no longer operational, but still makes an mighty impact on a space. The scale is made of brass, with two copper weigh pans. The shaped arms support the hanging pans, attached by linked brass strands. As seen in the detailed photos, each copper pan has been stamped numerous times with a seal, bearing a year, surrounded by Greek letters. The English crown can also be seen stamped into the copper. These dates signify when the scale was last calibrated. The brass column shaft sits atop a brass pedestal, which sits atop stacked brass, which sits upon a piece of gray marble. The entire scale is lifted by brass ball feet. The scale includes the weights with which it is pictured.
