    A regal gold and silver gilt mirror with intricate, carved details at the top and bottom. A splendid set of Ho ho birds top scrolling acanthus leaves on the crown of an elegant oval frame that terminates in a snake emerging from acanthus supports. The Ho ho bird is derived from the mythical Asian version of the phoenix and appears in 19th century decorative arts as a symbol of good luck and good fortune; specifically longevity, fidelity, and wisdom. The decorative elements on this piece give a little lift to its otherwise understated classic design. The original mercury glass is beveled which accentuates the beauty of its oval shape and is still brilliant with just the slightest bit of foxing.     A brilliant 19th century gold gilt mantle mirror, made in France circa 1870. The mirror is large and beautiful. The frame is ornamented with bundles of flowers that can be found in its corners and sides. The gilt finish has experienced some loss due to time and hundreds of feather dustings, exposing some of the red bole substratum. Often referred to as “French Red” this facet of gilt mirrors is sought after. The frame is trimmed in a twisted cording motif. The mirror has its original mercury glass, which has some foxing and sparkles galore. The “diamond dust” has become separated from the backing and fallen into the glass. Gravity has situated much of the sparkles along the mirror’s bottom.

A beautiful depiction of a toga-wearing woman floating among the clouds tops the mirror and is flanked by columns. Two tiny hooks are fixed beside the columns, making it doubly functional in any interior. The exterior of the cabinet is made of maple with a glossy finish. The center doors are lined with their original mirror plates. This case piece is modern and stylish with ample storage space. The interior has three fixed shelves on each side, and the right cabinet is also fitted with drawers. There are two working locks each with their own key. This hand-carved frame which once housed a large painting has now been repurposed into a fabulous Neoclassical style gilt mirror. Its beautiful details include wonderfully carved acanthus leaf corners and a deep reeded frame with thick inner trim and molded edges. A smooth space in the bottom center holds a plaque engraved with “JEAN D’ESPOUY” in all caps which signifies that the frame held work by artist Jean d’Espouy (1891-1921), a known French painter and watercolorist who exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais starting in 1910.     This is a massive French 19th Century mirror from the main hall of the Archbishop Palace Rouen, Normandy, France.  This mirror is over 10’ tall and more than 6’ wide.  Both the frame and mirror show aging.  The original mercury mirror plate has oxidized, creating an undeniable detail in this antique mirror.  The lines on this mirror fall where wood support pieces meet on the back of the mirror.  We can assume over a period of time, moist air flowing through the spaces behind the mirror caused the mercury to oxidize and flake off the glass.
