A pair of enormous 19th century French stoneware cruches traditionally used as a bottle or demijohn to transport and store water, oil, or wine–now artifacts of culinary history to add to one’s studio pottery collection or décor. The hand of the potter has imparted organic variation to the form with a wabi-sabi quality of utilitarian authenticity, using a salty glaze which creates movement across the (uneven) surfaces of the bottles in dramatic shifts of color from deep, earthy browns and reds to the neutral tan of the stoneware clay. The bulbous vessels use integrated handles at the top to aid in pouring liquid out of the narrow mouth that would have been corked. One cork is present. English 19th Century Marquetry and Inlay Jewelry Box

An extraordinary English jewelry box from the 19th century made of rosewood and meticulously inlaid with a number of other exotic materials for graphic contrast of motifs. On top of the lid, a stylized cartouche features a metal tag in the center, set in a diamond-shaped panel of bird’s eye maple and rosewood at the corners. Around the perimeter of the box is a thin line of geometric inlay using tiny pieces of ebonized wood, mother-of-pearl, bone, and silver which adds further intrigue. The interior is thoughtfully organized as a removable tray divided into sections and wrapped in cerulean blue velvet for various jewelry pieces. A small oval mirror in the lid is surrounded by ruched satin of the same color. Lifting out the tray accesses the open storage below. Geometric marquetry of luminous satinwood creates a border around the game tiles that speaks to the remarkable talent and skill of the carver throughout the different materials. This elongated box opens to an interior divided into three sections, wrapped in a charming star-motif paper and the tattered remains of blue satin in the lid. No key is present to operate the lock. This rectangular box has flat sides though animated by the undulations of the exotic wood and on the lid, stylized marquetry of wispy botanicals adds further intrigue and mystery around the contents. The interior is thoughtfully organized as a removable tray divided into sections wrapped in cerulean blue satin to protect various jewelry pieces and silver leaf gilding. A small oval mirror in the lid is surrounded by ruched satin of the same color. Below are two (locking) doors which swing out to reveal a shallow drawer of three sections, also padded in the same vibrant satin. One key included. Condition as expected from time and use with darkened areas of chips on the rims, crazing and faded transfers. Stamped on the reverse with the marks of the foundry and the initials C & M.
