Portuguese 18th Century Faux Bois Painted Cabinet

An exceptional Portuguese cabinet from the 18th century with faux bois painted exterior to mimic the exotic woods of the colonies, like rosewood and mahogany, that expertly captures their unique grain patterns and tone to become a unique work of art in the process. The top cabinet uses two, bifold paneled doors to enclose the interior, appearing as four narrow sections with dark, raised middle panels framed by contrasting “woods” in lighter tones. Each pair of doors has integrated bolts for vertically securing to the crown and bottom, plus a working lock fitted into the middle right door. Hidden in between the two bodies is a retractable shelf that slides out by two short knobs nearly imperceptible against the trim. In the lower body is a row of three drawers over a very wide drawer spanning the full width–all using wrought iron drop (lifting) handles to open. Note the middle drawer retains a working lock and key. For the modern interior the scale of this case piece is impressive alone, offering daily inspiration and fascination by the handpainted faux bois decoration to use for living and dining room storage, offices, or in place of an armoire. The wood cylinder is dotted by what remains of the floral and foliate brass stamp that would have printed a design onto paper, with other traces of the original illustration wrapping around the column. The lamp riser is an ebonized (painted) disc to not distract from the subtlety of the design. Cleaned and professionally rewired for US electrical using UL-listed parts including a new bronze-tone fabric cord, this table lamp is ready to illuminate your interior. Indonesian Pair of Vintage Brass Table Lamps

A pair of 20th century petite brass vases or candlesticks with Indonesian design motifs, that were adapted and electrified as custom table lamps. Their history is particularly evident in the depictions of traditional shadow puppet figures found throughout Bali and Java called wayang kulit in between the other rows of decorative symbolism. The patinated metal of brass alloy adds intrigue to the surface, defining the etched patterns with dark oxidation. Conical lampshades in ivory linen are and new braided cords are recent upgrades; the lamps have been professionally rewired to US electrical standards adding in-line switches to control candelabra-base lightbulbs. Four soldiers in the foreground regard him expressing a range of emotions from grief to shock. Flanking the middle scene are two narrow panels entirely handpainted with exquisite geometric designs in more bold saturations of color, resembling Moorish tiles, all outlined in gold gilt. A stunning, late 19th century French buffet in a variety of exotic materials that radiates sophistication and unabashed luxury in a dining room or other living space. The top surface of brecciated marble features patches of gray and taupe stone surrounded by ribbons of white and orange veining, finished with a bowed front in the center that conforms to the slight projection of the storage case below. Burled maple veneer wrapping the storage case exhibits uniquely figured patterns of tightly swirled grain and dense accumulation of “eyes” in a glorious shade of honey-gold. Ebonized inlay in thin pinstripes creates definition on the two drawer front and two doors, with a geometric inlay using mahogany applied to the curved panel at center. Neoclassical ormolu appliques in floral motif armor the front corners, matching the swagged drawer handles and ornate escutcheons over the doors. Both doors retain working locks to enclose the undivided cabinet offering a long, fixed shelf, 15 ¾” deep. Conical feet nod to modernity without the expected fluting, raising the piece from the floor. The door retains its original mirror plate–barely touched with dark foxing at the upper left corner–opening by working lock and key to access the spacious interior of four shelves, 13” deep, adjustable on sawtooth brackets.
