An extraordinary parcel gilt and polychrome console table from Italy, circa 1780, which has miraculously retained its handpainted, stylized Neoclassical illustrations in green, yellow, and red. As if an artifact from Pompeii, whose rediscovery and excavations along with the town of Herculanaeum where shaping 18th century fashion, the table top features an illustration of a Greek-style vessel (krater) depicting a reclining male youth joined by a harpist to the left and a character with an offering of fruit to the right. This masterpiece of furniture will astound in any interior. Note that the console has developed a slight lean toward the right side after three centuries and should be bracketed to the wall for extra security. There is evidence of a professional repair to the back left corner of the stone. Please view the detailed images to see more.

French, 18th century Louis XV period seating ensemble to instantly transform a parlor or living room into a grand “salon” with seven pieces: one camelback sofa, three fauteuil armchairs, and three (armless) side chairs. Upholstery of cut velvet in pale green–like a white jade–has been brocaded with tonal damask patterns, harmonizing with the botanical theme in the caved frames, and outlined in brass nailhead trim. The giltwood frames have patinated over the centuries to reveal the deep red bole underneath, giving definition to the sinuous, rococo curves accented with floral and foliate carvings positioned at strategic points for maximum effect. The thoughtful proportions of the seat interior (balancing the heights and depths) are all quite comfortable, with dense stuffing of horse hair or other natural material that remains mostly firm and supportive underneath the tight upholstery. $2,200.00

    30"H x 7.75"W x 7.75"D

    Dimensions: 30” H x 7 ¾” W x 7 ¾” D

A stunning pair of French, 18th century giltwood candlesticks from a church or cathedral. These substantial “pricket” candlesticks will make a statement on any mantel or table: tall, slender forms on tripod bases are mounted with their original wrought iron spikes and their baluster silhouettes are decorated with Classical (and subtle Louis XVI) patterns. Stylized leaves, fluting, and festooned motifs are highlighted by the rich gold leaf finish now aged to a soft patina. Note that as the pair would have been against the altar and not seen in the round, they are not entirely gilded to save resources so one vertical strip on the backside appears more of a burnt sienna than gold. • French 18th Century Louis XV Solid Walnut & Inlay Armoire

    $11,000.00

    112"H x 71"W x 27.50"D

    Dimensions: 112” H x 71” W x 27 ½” D

This French Provincial armoire from the 18th century is absolutely breathtaking in every detail. Stylistically the armoire reflects Louis XV taste, with a number of unexpected features that transcend time and place to still capture hearts and imaginations in the modern interior (that is, with the scale to accommodate such a monumental work). A classic bonnet-top cornice arches gently around the crown of the case over towering, paneled doors opening smoothly on steel barrel hinges. Tracing the curvaceous panels of the doors (and implied pilaster between them) is the most exquisite, pinstripe inlay of alternating dark & light wood tones with intermittent “checked” squares like a gameboard for a geometric counterpoint to the sinuous lines. One, very large key operates the locking right door and acts as a pull. The left door hooks from the inside to keep it in place when closed, fitted with an intricate iron crank to operate the vertical latch piercing the upper and lower part of the frame. Inside are three proportionate shelves, 61” W x 19 ½” D, for ample storage of clothing or linens. The center of the serpentine apron is marked with a “Kolovrat” icon, the ancient symbol like a spinning wheel that signifies movement, growth, the sun, and life cycle to bring luck and protection. Scrolling motifs morph into escargot-style feet that raise the piece from the floor. Note there is some loss to the apron just behind the front-left foot, please view the detailed images to appreciate all the special features of this remarkable antique armoire. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, ready for your interior.

    91.63"H x 55.38"W x 20.38"D

A French solid pine carved armoire from the Louis XV period, with stylized bonnet top, dramatic paneled doors, and serpentine apron that together give this large storage piece its historic character. Scrolled carvings flow from the arched cornice, rounding out the crown over a pair of doors that mirror each other’s calligraphic outline around the paneling. Each door is punctuated in the lower third by circular panels, as well as one above. The doors open by working lock and key to reveal two shelves, approximately 12 ½” deep. In the lower cabinet–protruding forward beyond the upper body–past a working lock and key is an interior fitted with a single shelf, 16 ⅜” deep. The sinuous lines of the swelled apron transition into carved escargot feet, another signature of the Louis XV taste for refined, yet playful touches. From its graceful curves to robust proportions and charming patina, this Louis XV armoire will bring a comforting presence to any home. It has been cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax to be ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images to see more and the current condition.

A wonderful 18th century French gold giltwood mirror, likely made as a wedding gift, the square frame is dense with texture and pattern of grape vines to brighten up any room. Unusual for this genre of mirrors, the expected pedimented at the top has been curiously omitted, telling its symbolic narrative of abundance through delicate tendrils and grape clusters that wrap around the French gray painted background. The foliate elements are bookended at the lower corners with rosettes which transition into the tall feet elevating and protecting the frame. Beaded molding on the interior surrounds the original mirror plate that shows a line of foxing toward the middle among other spots of textural oxidation. Strung with wire on the back, ready to hang in your interior. Please view the detailed images to see more and the current condition.

A magnificent 18th century French giltwood trumeau mirror in the style of Louis XVI, the thick rococo carvings around the (French gray) painted frame appear even more theatrical under a layer of gold. At the top of the piece is a near spherical cartouche, the fronton appearing as a garden urn enclosed by two scrolls. This theme of curling waves and acanthus leaves accentuates the top corners of the frame rounding out any geometry, underscoring the romantic qualities of this antique mirror down to the shell ornament at the base. Mirror plate is likely a more recent replacement: glass is mostly clear with few spots of foxing and crystals are absent. Strung with picture wire, ready to hang in your interior. A handsome walnut & marble commode from France, an 18th century original in the Louis XVI style, fitting with traditional to transitional interiors of today. The removable stone top is a thick cut of Saint Anne marble that has been shaped to turreted front corners and square at the back; the maker has chosen to sign the piece on the top of the left legs which is only visible when the stone is removed (an “L. Martine” and what appears to be “Louvard”). The plate rim is engraved with scrolling acanthus, inscribed with “NF” at the top separated by a tiny fleur-de-lis, with “Anno 1735” at the bottom. In the central frame, Saint Peter (spelled “Petri”) is holding a book in his left hand and is extending a key to Paul (Pavli), who holds a book in his left hand and right hand on a sword pointed down. Their names are separated by a fleur-de-lis, and in the background around the figures one may notice stylized floral depictions growing from the ground.
