French 19th Century Painted Transitional Commode
Dimensions: 32 5/8″H x 48″W x 22 1/4″D
A lovely 19th century three-drawer painted commode from France. The commode has been made in a transitional style, blending elements of Directoire, Louis XV hardware, and has most certainly been influenced by Swedish Gustavian furniture. The three drawers are graduated in size, the topmost being the smallest; the bottom being the largest. They are each adorned with Rococo style cast brass escutcheons and brass drop pulls, cast in a gargoyle motif. The drawers are flanked by fluted corners. Short, fluted and tapered feet lift the commode from the ground. The painted finish is extraordinary. Perfectly worn edges and crackled paint combine in this uniquely individual antique to produce an aged appearance that is second to none. c.1850.
