A French, solid oak coffer from the 1700, this heavy storage trunk has a paneled construction graced by various handcarved patterns such as roses along the upper trim, and more abstract designs on the pillars. Note the “honest repair” of a circular metal patch in the far left panel on the top which adds to the rustic charm of this 18th century antique. Instead of mitered corners on each panel, the craftsman shaped little notches into the long planks to create a bevel which speaks to the thoughtful intentions that make this a cherished antique for future generations. The lid opens on hand-forged iron hinges to a spacious interior only interrupted by the presence of a small candle box to the left. A fantastic 19th century French traveling trunk, constructed of pine and steel, dressed in light peach colored illustrations on paper. Graphic, geometric patterns and stylized cartouche animate the exterior, the gridded layout underscored by the steel and wood frame that would have protected one’s personal effects while traveling by steamship or by train. Stickers from cities around France are still adhered to the sides, some still perfectly legible. Remains of leather handles are also evident but not intact.
