This is an English 19th century terracotta rhubarb forcer for the garden. A rhubarb forcer is a bell-shaped pot with a lidded opening at the top, used to cover rhubarb to limit photosynthesis. They encourage the plant to grow early in the season and also produce blanched stems. The pots are placed over two- to three-year-old rhubarb crowns during winter or very early spring. Once shoots appear the lid is taken off, causing them to grow towards the light. This one no longer has a cover. It would be great in a garden to protect other plants or as a conversation piece.

Two drawers are hung from the bench’s bottom which have also had their fronts painted green. Their metal hardware has been painted as well. The front legs and front arm posts have been turned, and along with the rest of the bench’s frame, has patinated marvelously over the years, contributing to the bench’s overall antique, English charm. c. 1880.
