Shop Vintage & Antique Drop-Leaf Tables

Drop-leaf tables, also known as Pembroke tables, are a type of side table. The signature feature is a central drawer and drop-leaf flaps that fold up and down on either side of the table, bringing in more space.

Antique drop-leaf tables often feature detailed legs, which can be square, turned, or tapered.

Drop-leaf tables date back to the 18th century, cherished through the centuries for their timeless English design style that fits beautifully in bedrooms or living rooms. Collectors also prize French and Swedish drop-leaf tables for their craftsmanship.

How to Choose an Antique Drop-Leaf Table

To select the right antique table for your space, consider the style and shape you want for the room. Are you using the drop-leaf table as a nightstand, end table, or desk?

As a desk, a Pembroke table with a single fold-down size offers versatility and convenience. Triangle-shaped drop-leaf tables may work well in smaller spaces as side tables next to a sofa. In a bedroom, you may be able to accommodate larger tables if the space is larger.

Drop-leaf tables with rectangular shapes can also work as sofa consoles. This allows great versatility, as you can extend the table for entertaining to use it as a buffet or bar.

Types of Antique Drop-Leaf Tables

Drop-leaf and Pembroke tables make unusual yet elegant side tables and nightstands in rooms featuring antique, classical, and vintage flair. In farmhouse, shabby chic, midcentury, or Victorian spaces, they can add just the right touch of style.

Drop-leaf tables were developed from the gate-leg table style, popular in the 17th century. The name “Pembroke” refers to the aristocratic English Pembroke family. According to oral history, it was Henry Herbert, the 9th Earl of Pembroke, who commissioned the drop-leaf table design in the 18th century.
