A pair of early 20th century French petite silverplate table lamps in restrained and refined decorative elements over the slender urn forms, that will delight on a buffet or bedside tables. Their Neoclassical styling is particularly evident in the pairs of lion faces on each side of the lamp bases, clutching rings in their teeth. The patinated metal reveals patches of brass alloy underneath the remaining silverplate which adds intrigue to the surface, defined at the shoulders and pedestals of the urns with rings of foliate motifs. Bell-shaped lampshades in ivory silk are trimmed with layers of blush and gold braided cords around the edges adding to the grandeur. This substantial Neoclassical fixture has a Greco-Roman female figure for a base, elevating a large urn above her head from which the socket rises, diffusing the light under a rectangular linen shade. The pedestal is ebonized wood with faint craquelure and some patina. As a single lamp, this would work well in a variety of interiors and rooms such as for a desk lamp or on a side table to appreciate the sculptural quality of the bronze. Look closely and one can still observe a cross-hatched texture imparted by the hand of the artist. In the past as bouillotte candles would burn down one would use a key, where the shade connects the middle shaft, to lower the shade as the candles went down to allow the players to be free of glare. This example was converted to a table lamp in the early-to-mid 20th century. The fuel well is supported by three brass legs with paw feet topped by three brass gryphon supports, holding the bronze bowl, decorated with foliate motifs and an artichoke finial. The whole is supported on a three-pointed bronze plinth base in stacked formation. Lamp includes custom pleated shade.
