French, 19th century pewter pitcher (or ewer) for serving wine and water. This elegant vessel features a beaded–or pearl–trim on the slender handle that is repeated on the circumference of the base. An interesting set of four, French pewter tankards from the 19th century ranging in metric sizes from one centiliter (1 cl) to a deciliter (one-tenth of a liter). The front of each mug–opposite the handle–is engraved with their precise capacity as these would have been used in a commercial setting like a general store to measure dry goods. These cylindrical vessels have flat, squared handles and are commonly referred to as a tankard, differentiating them from a common mug or stein. Likely all are from the same period in the 19th century as they share a basic form, however bear different hallmarks underneath. An “alphabet soup” of random letters imprinted on each cup is the approval stamp of various inspectors from the government, indicating the cups were precise and the shopkeeper was not cheating the customers.
