French oil-on-board painting circa 1900 of a tranquil river or canal, meandering through a lowcountry landscape with a Dutch-type barge boat in the foreground and a farmhouse just upstream. The Post-Impressionist style and subdued color palette are contrasted with the painted and texturized frame of antique white that shows large areas of loss to the right side. Note that the original sticker from the department store of Magasins Réunis at place de la République (Paris) is still affixed to the back, which was founded in the late 19th century and enjoyed great success for many years.
