French 19th century Louis XVI style painted and parcel gold-gilt barometer and thermometer. It is a recognizable ‘banjo’ shaped scientific instrument with all the carved details in gold gilt mounted to a case of painted, sage green. The circular dial of the barometer has painted (faded) lettering behind protective glass for reading the current conditions, while the thermometer above is scaled. It may no longer work for taking accurate measurements, this relic of meteorology history is an intriguing decorative piece to add French flourish to any wall. The colorful supporting images bring the text to life through thought-provoking scenes which are a complete departure from any previous styles or schools of religious art but still very attuned to the emotional and spiritual weight of the verses. Condition is very good with some wear to the red leather-bound cover; the gilded edges of the pages have dulled; some foxing of the paper, otherwise the plates are still vibrant to enjoy. 18th Century Portuguese Altar

A fantastic oratory or tabletop altar from 18th century Portugal, made of carved, painted, and gilded wood taking the form of a small cabinet (where religious statuary would be displayed). The niche interior is painted a leafy shade of green, framed by an arched doorway flanked on the sides by scrolling corbels which continue down the sides as floral-foliate carvings in high-relief. Dark, angular molding that wraps the chamfered corners of the crown and the stepped base appears reddish brown now, with traces of the original gilding. The left and right sides of the case are decorated in a faux marble finish of implied veining which underscores that this altar is a unique work of art by its own merits. French 18th Century Forged Iron Andirons

A towering pair of 18th century French forged, wrought iron andiron-chenets to watch over the hearth. They include a small basket at the top for warming, the rim impressed with a geometric pattern that is repeated on the column and contrasted by the twisted detail of the rods. Scrolled elements curl outward from the pillars attaching multiple spit hooks to adjust for cooking temperatures. Decorative scrollwork in between the arched legs are reminiscent of fleur-de-lis to underscore the French-made origins of these sculptural fireplace tools. Designed as a complementary pair, each andiron is the mirror image of the other with an offset hind leg (the bracket to elevate the burning logs) supported by a spike. An inspiring example of 19th century Portuguese folk art pottery, this handmade terracotta bowl expresses the unique history of decorative arts traditions found across the Iberian peninsula which borrowed imagery from cultures far and wide. Crafted in terracotta and finished with a buttery gold slip glaze, the bowl features whimsical (if not symbolic) crosshatched pyramids in burnt orange, and parallel lines dividing the interior into four quadrants occupied by dark green wave motifs. A lovely glazed terra cotta cream bowl from 19th century France. This earthen bowl, also known as a pancheon, was used to stand milk while the cream separates. The cream is then poured off the top with the small spout found on the pot’s lip. This antique bowl is in excellent condition, appropriately glazed a butter-yellow on the interior and a soft matte exterior. This glaze was not only a decorative choice but prevented the milk from being absorbed by the terra cotta. A stunning pair of Italian 19th century giltwood wall appliqués–decorative elements to enhance the architectural program–likely obtained from a church or cathedral as they are flat and unfinished on the backs, intended to be viewed from front. The Eternal Flame urn forms are handcarved with stunning Neoclassical motifs and textures that not only conveys the power of the church but also the lasting influence of the Empire shaped by Napoleon’s vision. At the top of each urn is a textured, waving flame that would have been illuminated by candlelight to magnify its aura. Pairs of eagle heads–iconic symbols of the period–are mounted on each side of the urn’s shoulder with an amber glass rosette embedded in between them. Festooned swags emphasize the curvature and fullness of the urn which is revisited again where the form tapers toward the base as fluted carvings mixed with additional floral-foliate references unifying the exuberance of the design. Block feet painted the color of red bole elevate the urns to stabilize them on a table or mantel. Note that evidence of wax is still visible on the backsides, confirming their historic age. Constructed of thick, wood panels the central vignette features the risen Jesus with right arm outstretched to gesture with three-fingers (for the Holy Trinity) while his left hand holds a red banner against a pastel corona in the background. Four soldiers in the foreground regard him expressing a range of emotions from grief to shock. Flanking the middle scene are two narrow panels entirely handpainted with exquisite geometric designs in more bold saturations of color, resembling Moorish tiles, all outlined in gold gilt.
